Yea, in that case I'd be looking at all the options - I know there was talk of a standalone midi converter from one of the big accessory makers a while back. Think there's a mention of it on the HC synth/hi-tech guitar forum (which isn't a terrible cesspool most of the time) over the last year or so.

The Roland works for me as I use the vGuitar stuff as much as the synth (and my synth needs are small in the scheme of things and the 55 has enough deep editing to make me happy).

If I want more or simply to 'play a synth and not like a guitar' I have the RS-5 and softsynth options.

Ironically though, I play some instruments better with the guitar synth than I ever did on the keyboard - maybe it's because I spent so long trying to be Pharoah Sanders and Albert Ayler.

There have been a few stand-alone-ish guitar-MIDI converters in rackmount form over the years, Axon being one. Tracking is supposed to have improved drastically since when that was on the market.

The Fishman Triple Play seems to be the new hotness in non-Roland guitar-MIDI. You need to use it with a PC, Mac, or iPad. Run soft-synths or run a MIDI out.
