Yeah, or when you're demoing a compressor while using a comp on your amp. That's why I've been recording all of my demos direct, just bass --> effect --> computer. Pull out as many variables as I reasonably can, to let y'all hear the pedal itself. From there, let you figure out if it'll work in your setup (much like why real estate agents will paint the walls of a house white, in order to give the prospective buyer a clean slate to imagine what they can do with it).

this is quite true. i try to find as many demos of a particular pedal as possible...i can't even tell you how many damn phaser demos i went through before i finally settled on the TC XII, and i'm sure i watched at least five of the W&C Tall Font Russian. from there i feel like i can triangulate to an idea of what the pedal sounds like. i particularly appreciate the combination of Andy and/or Burgs, the Prymaxe guy--i really don't like his playing or arrangements, but i think he does a good job of showing how the pedals SOUND, and Sylnau for a more creative approach. i also like Just Nick, and think FBG's demos are way underrated.
i've also become a demo detective after getting burned a couple of times, especially by makers' official videos. for example, if the playing never stops without a fadeout, there's probably a noise problem. you have to look for the concealment of flaws.

I know you and I have definitely had this discussion in the past and it's made me think about demos more since then. I definitely started recognizing how what is played in the demo used to completely rule what I thought of a pedal. Since then, I've tried to listen just for the character of an effect and focus less on what's being played.
What is infinitely more helpful to me are comparison demos. I'd love for companies to line up all of their effects of a certain type and demo them side by side, playing the same thing. For example, this RRR vs RV-5 demo really translated to me why people described the RRR as deep and ambient when stand alone demos didn't really get the point across as much.

The appeal of demos...

To me, the appeal of demos is their usefulness in the information gathering process, when I'm curious to learn more about something without practical opportunity to get hands on it while minimizing personal risk (financial, health, other).
Obviously it's no substitute for firsthand experience, but that isn't always an option.
My old man is known to quote proverbs:
"Chance favors the prepared mind"Caveat Emptor applies, especially when shopping on the internet.
There isn't always a return policy and warranty.
Consider the situation that Behndy recently went through with the bit crusher/sample reducer w/e.
If unfamiliar, search his post history. His demo is informative beyond the company's advertising pitch.
The internet is a powerful tool for education, enrichment and personal growth as well as networking and upward mobility.
It's better for more than just bbs grabassery...not that there's anything wrong with that
But people who make *demos* that are nothing more than show & tell attention whoring exhibitions to the tune of "this is my toy watch me play with it" can take it right on the arches and save it for their blog. Aint nobody got time for that.

yea i can feel u guys on that. reality sets in as well and ppl can't afford the $$$ and/or time acquaring and flipping thru like 5-10 pedals (very fun tho i guess).
lol yea those demos are kinda meh, unboxing lol. major kudos to those who do informative and interesting videos. that shit is harder than it looks for sure.

I try to get in there:
Dry Sound
Just Effect
Effect with maybe a bit o Reverb
Sometimes Effect with other effects
The reason being that effects are not used in a vacuum. You are quite likely to have amp reverb or reverb or other effects on as well but you also need to show what the pedal itself does.
