i'm afraid of 100 grit. for me, 220 is right on the edge of tearing up the wood too much.

Re: Hey, tell me if this would look terrible or not.
Thanks doods
Turns out I'm not going to the gym today so I'll probably sand the front later on.
Agreed, 220 is normally the lowest I'd go, and it's what I stripped the last one with, but man...that shit took FOREVER. I just can't slave over it that much again.
Even with 100-grit, very little wood is removed unless I hit an edge too hard; feels more like I'm rubbing the sealer away than tearing it out. It will easily mess up the edges, though.

Re: Hey, tell me if this would look terrible or not.
Have you tried 180 grit? When I used to refinish drums I would use 180 to knock it down to bare wood then hit it with 300 to smooth out any scratches and then finally with 600 to make it really smooth yet leave enough grooves for the primer to stick (I'd then sand the primer of course). If your going to be staining it I would do 180 > 300 > 600 > 1200. The 1200 will leave the wood feeling smooth but still rough enough for the stain to take and if you apply any laquer for it to stick as well.

Re: Hey, tell me if this would look terrible or not.
Mm, I don't have 180, just 150 and then 220. Maybe the 100 is a bit too much. I'll move it up some.
Yeah, I'm gonna work my way up until it's smooove, then wipe a little water on and sand the grains that raise up two or three times, slap the stain on it however many times it needs, then finish with the Tru-oil.
No Sand-and-Seal BS, no million layers of nitro that take months to cure, no worrying about sanding through anything...glorious.
I am pretty sure the headstock's gonna be black after all, but spraying that is no big deal.
I'll post another stain/oil project here too 'cause after the finish is complete, this one's gonna be on standby until I can pay for pickups and classes
(in that order)

i hear you on the 220 taking too long thing. it seemed like it took forever just to do the NECK on the Musima.

Raised the grain and sanded back a few times until it was smooth like baby child. Staining time, yo.
I took these right after applying the stain, looks like butt when it's fresh and is being absorbed into the wood at different rates. You have to be really fast and try to blend the stain into itself while wiping. As always, the sides are no fun. Probably best to do them first, actually...oh well.
AW MAN THIS IS THE SCARIEST PART
PLEASE DON'T BE AWFUL WHEN YOU'RE DRY

ROUND 2 SON, NOT EVEN DRY YET BUT WHATEVER
Still all splotchy and stuff 'cause of the fresh seepage. I kinda like this amount of...uh, darkness. Saturation?
This is where I stop until tomorrow, hopefully it'll be nice and even by then.

Re: Hey, tell me if this would look terrible or not.
Thanks dudes!
I did another round of stain yesterday, but it felt too saturated so I wiped a little of it away. Without some black dye or something mixed in, it's never gonna be as dark as originally planned but I'm digging it as is. Let it dry today while I did some other crap and tomorrow I'll take pics after wiping a few layers of Tru-oil on. Also started spraying the headstock black.
I wonder if there's something cheaper than Stewmac's pickguard blanks that I could use...
