I have a CAR VM and a Fender J Mascis, and I love everything about both of them. The Fender feels nicer, but really only just a little bit.

It's just a little less...I dunno. The J's pickups are a little more aggressive. And, the guitar is just a little more resonant and sustainy, probably due to the tuneomatic instead of the crap Jazzmaster/Jaguar bridge. Plus, I'm pretty sure the purple sparkle adds like 15 hp.

I'll chime in with the others. Get one.

They're great guitars - not just for the money, but period. Solid all around, and they don't *need* anything out of the box. Upgrades are fine, but it's not like they're necessary.

I've got two, and I've been ridiculously happy with them.

Both are stock, aside from the pick guards. I might change pickups in one of them, but for now the CAR one is set up to be a bit hotter, as the aluminum guard gives a lot more bite to the tone.

I've had the pleasure of playing some absolutely fabulous squiers at my local store. Can't wait to start working there so I can get that sick discount.

PRO-TIP:

Wait for Musician's Friend or Guitar Center to have one of their almost weekly $50 off on $299+ sales, call in, and get it on a VM. I've yet to pay over $250 for one of my VM's, and one, if I remember right, ended up being under $200.

It's worth the risk to order if you can get a deal like that. I got two duds - a CAR Jag with a twisted neck and pile of finish flaws, and a Sonic Blue Jazzmaster with a few big black flecks in the finish. MF took both back and had new ones out to me immediately. It was a little annoying, but hey - I saved over $100 on them, and got two guitars I'll keep indefinitely.
