Somebody was trying to convince me I should play a PRS... relentless almost. I told them what you said, fine guitars....but I can't see myself playing with one. If you have a guitar like that.... i just feel you'd have a lot of pressure to play well.

I am also pretty useless at fingerpicking, although to be honest it's not something I've ever spent a great deal of time trying to learn. I tried for a bit in my teens when I was learning Alice In Chains stuff, but gave up on it. I'm also not keen on shred style playing, I can do it a bit, but I'm not into the music and it doesn't appeal. I widdle to keep my fingers warm :grumpy:

Still not my style. :idk: I'm more of a 59 tv yellow double cut les paul kind of guy. And again I'm sure it sounds/plays great, its just the way they look. When it comes to playing live I'm totally obsessed with how the audience perceives the band. And the way my mind works, a PRS represents making love to fine women... I want my guitar to be more along the lines of backseat teenage sex.

.....what....that makes sense....right? :erm:

Agreed. Ugly bastards.

I can't slap because I have hypermobile hands. Because of this I have hitchhiker's thumbs, which are uncomfortable to hold straight. Since I hold the tip of my thumb back, when I slap my hands are perpendicular to the strings, making it hard to pop and impossible to slap anything but the lowest string.

OK. I'm gonna come to the defense of "slapping".
Slapping is just like any other weapon.....it can be used for good, or evil.

While Flea is an amazing one-of-a-kind musician, the tons and tons of soul-less jock-rockers that he has spawned make me sick too. If that's all you know about slap bass, then no wonder you hate it.

BUT, I'm a BIG fan of the funk (late 60s through early 80s).
There are lots and lots of records/bassists who have dispensed some tasty tasty slapping (beginning with Larry Graham of Sly & The Family Stone, and onward.)
(sidenote: my ash body/maple board jazz bass gets a delicious slap tone...hee hee)

As far as stuff I wouldn't do....as a drummer, I will never play double bass drums. Although I dig a lot of metal, and I've dabbled in double kick, it's just not me.

I guess in terms of drums, I will never use a double-kick, or more than one rack tom. I'm also not into having more than 1-2 cymbals excluding the high hats.

Larry Graham does indeed own.

I don't necessarily hate slap bass, but when used its very easy to fall into that octave slap/pop done-to-death stuff, at least for me. If I need that slappy sound I do the Entwistle "slap" with fingertips against the fretboard, I much perfer the control and sound that way.

:idk: I just get pissed off when people start to think that if you don't slap you're not a competent bassist. Maybe thats only the stigma around here, though.

Larry Graham is a great bass player. He also knows when to slap and when not to.

I think its the attitude that you have to slap or your crap that pisses me off.

I'm more of a keep the groove kind of player. Although I do venture into melody now and then.
Now with a bit of practice I could start a just bass and drummer band.

Hmmm. I realize it's the post-Primus post-RHCP dudes slapping within a rock context, like some kind of display of macho athleticism that grosses me out.

Also, I would personally never play a bass with more than four strings. Although it's just a tool that can be used for good or evil, I almost never see thm being used tastefully.....just wanky wanky evil.
