I was going to suggest an Epi ES175, but taking a look on ebay for them, it looks like they're all going for over 500 bucks now. So I'm no help.

Check out some of the mid range Gretsch guitars. The electromatic series I think it is? Great guitars for the money, definitely gets the jangle on. My guitarist just switched from his American strat to one of those gretsch hollow bodies with the cat eye f holes and it sounds waaaaaaayyy better than.

My guitarist/friend bought this 12 string for a pittance 20 years ago. He finally dusted it off and had it go through a set up and repair last month. The thing sounds amazing. I'm sure it is some sort of 70s Japanese guitar, but it doesn't even have a name on the headstock. Doesn't make it any less awesome though.

^^^ I don't know what that is, but it looks nice. Might be early Matsumoku/Aria/Arai or something.

Saw a guy plying one of these through a blackface deluxe reverb the other night. Sounded unreal, those pickups are something else...jangly but really growly and mean.

Yeah, that sounds about right. It's just ridiculous how good this thing sounds. I can't think of anything currently out there that would approximate it. You have to go vintage Japan to make this magic happen.
