My only guitar is a 90's strat. I love it. It's so easy to play and sounds great. I've never gotten any sounds with it that I think "hey, pink floyd" but oh well, I'm okay with that...
I put a blender pot in it and that sounds great too. Also, I have a love hate relationship with the bridge pickup.

I only play an american stratocaster bought three years ago. I modded with lace sensor blue\red\silver, less funky\bluesy twang, I really like her sound. It's my only guitar now, with these pickups I can cover a huge range of sound, from Pumpkins to Radiohead, from Hendrix to Gilmour, from Old School Rock to Jazz. The only thing I don't like is the tremolo, I prefer the Jazzy tailpiece tremolo.
I'm totally in love with my strat and expecially with Lace pups, some people hate them, some people love them, the neck pup (blue) sounds like a p90 or low output vitage humbucker, very muddy and warm, the middle (silver), I have no words to describe it, it's my favourite pup, very ethereal, the brigde (red) has spooky and sharp clean sounding, it can reach hi gain sounding, it's awesome
The 4th and 2nd position are awesome, I prefer neck with middle, I never loved the bridge and the middle position
Another important thing! The lace pups are awesome coumbined with pedal effects, fuzz, overdrive, modulation, delays, reverb, etc...

Re: Jazzmaster user wondering about Strats.
First guitar I ever had was a strat. I fucking hated it.
It was this dumb bright red, it played like arse and for some reason strings just seemed to rust right off the thing within a matter of weeks (I convinced myself I had acid sweat). When I finally got a new guitar I was sorely tempted to set fire to it... but it was a present that would have been unseemly. I hated every strat I played for ages.
Jump to three years later and I bought myself a Schecter 97 California Custom in surf green off ebay. I mostly bought it because of the colour but once I sat down with it and started playing I completely fell in love. I still have it and it's one of my favorite guitars.
The point of the story? Stratocasters are super weird guitars and can have a whole bunch of personality or can be the biggest blah of a guitar you will ever find. I'm not a strat guy but even I found mine, play enough of them and you will too.
