i have seven currently. five are on my board, largely for the convenience of having them in defined ranges of gain/fuzz. i could get away with two or three--my only dirt pedal for 30 years (that's not a typo) was an old Distortion+ i still play today--but it's simpler to have a Tone Bender and a Buzzaround than to adjust the Buzzaround to cop a Bender-ish sound.

to be legit you just have to find the right sound for yourself. it's what you do with it, not how much you've got (TWHS).

I have ten on my dedicated dirt board. And another dozen + on the shelf to play with optionally.

I'm always buying or selling to try different things but I generally have 5 or 6 at a time. Got 4 on my board right now and some others lying around.

Each one does something different, 3-4 are in my guitar rig, 1 in bass rig. The Harmonic Percolator is the wildcard.
I typically dial in the sweet spot with my rig and then set/forget.
Then I expand their range with tremolo, delay, reverb and octave/pitch shifting.

Dirt boxes are the bookends to a good KILLER pedal chain...but recent findings suggest tremolololo before everything is how you stunt, freal.

you either need six of whatever or just one era correct ram's head muff. if you are considering a duplication or clone of the ram's head, you are seriously going to need atleast five other fuzz pedals.
i ended up ditching fuzz altogether and now just run eight ring modulators in serial.

seriously though, i use one fuzz (BoW), one drive, and one boost.
been yearning for a caroline guitar company cannonball though.
