this is a bitch. had to think about it for a while... & almost guarantee i'm not thinking of something that deserves a place in here more than one of the others... know sub genres & sub-sub-sub genres get ridiculous but it'd have been easier if i coulda split it up & done a few.
1 - nirvana - smells like teen spirit
2 - autolux - turnstile blues
3 - failure - another space song
4 - alice in chains - would
5 - smashing pumpkins - soma
funny since outta those dirt wouldn't make my album top 10 and yet a song by one of the other six didn't make it...
& obviously yes i grew up a grunge kid.

Like rock rock? As in, not metal, not prog, not punk, but like ... ROCK. Interesting. Hmmm.
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
Zeppelin - Custard Pie
Stones - Gimme Shelter
Hendrix - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
Ben Folds Five - Army (yeah, that's right, you heard me, COME AT ME BRO)

i'm taking "rock songs" as songs tied to the 50s rock tradition, rather than sub-genres a la punk, shoegaze, or metal.
"Ace of Spades," Mötorhëad
"All Down The Line," Rolling Stones
"Great Balls of Fire," Jerry Lee Lewis
"Summertime Blues" (live), The Who
"Mona," Quicksilver Messenger Service
honorable mention: The Clash, "Somebody Got Murdered" (so it's punk...shoot me)
the "no punk" thing cut me off at the knees, or rather at the Eight-knees. there'd certainly have been at least one Sex Pistols song ("Bodies") and "Red" by Mission of Burma otherwise. my self-imposed rockism also excludes the Beach Boys ballads i adore like "The Warmth Of The Sun." and if you count 60s soul as rock, fuck all that and give me the Temptations "My Girl" all DAY.

Echoes-Pink Floyd
Fairies Wear Boots-Black Sabbath
Breed-Nirvana
Jail Break- Shellac covering AC/DC
Rumble-Link Wray
went kinda Classic rock then Grunge/post rock there
but i love rock. are the Jesus Lizard just rock? Maybe pushing it, but if they are just rock, then they are the best rock band of the past 30 years.

how fun is that right?
I like this better than Rapeman's take on ZZ top.
Love how the bass has a filter effect for just that one note.
I saw Shellac once. For some reason they sounded better than everyone else that day.
hahaha....they did though.

Clearly, based on sheer number of list inclusions, Motörhead is the best rock band of all time.
