Zendrive into a blackface or silverface Fender is supposed to get reasonably close to the Overdrive Special gain sound. The Zendrive is a tweaked Tubescreamer variant but generally speaking I don't think most Tubescreamers (or most variants) sound all that close to that lead sound.
It's kind of a shame that Dumbles and clones are in that expensive end of the market so that they're the realm of blues dentists and not non-famous working musicians. Mockery by association with the people who use and covet them does insulate against the disappointment of "I can't afford that," though. My life is "I can't afford that" for the next couple years on most anything and it makes a guy really critical of gear.

Even if most of us could afford the things snake oil is snake oil and placebos are placebos... and when you say a ts clone into a normal fender gets you close to the sound that kind'a defeats their whole rep as being that unique...

Alright, here's what the deal is:
The Dumble Overdrive Special (the one everyone cares about) is a blackface Deluxe Reverb modded to have more gain. So yeah.
I don't really know if there is an overdrive that emulates the sound because most dumbles stay in the studio. Even SRV mainly used Marshall Majors and Fender Supers in a live setting.

I hear you. But think close in the sense that x pedal makes a Fender amp sound like a cranked Super Lead. Doesn't eliminate the need or desire for Marshall styled amps.
The Dumble thing doesn't seem to be snake oil as a total proposition, but the pricing makes it ridiculous and cloners can make a great margin at a tenth or less of the cost and still be as expensive as many classic vintage amps. The circuits aren't the simplest things to build, but they shouldn't be quite that expensive if not for some idiosyncratic market forces.

Exactly! I am not saying the things don't have their own sound but that much for a new guitar amp that is basically nothing new in terms of technology and can be built out of obtainable parts... it's a circuit... not a violin... and even those are getting to the point were if you have the right tools and skill you can pump out a pretty scary one...
