Everybody has a secret world inside of them. All of the people of the world, I mean everybody. No matter how dull and boring they are on the outside, inside them they've all got unimaginable, magnificent, wonderful, stupid, amazing worlds. Not just one world. Hundreds of them. Thousands maybe

Re: That first fuzz tone you remember
Until I heard this, I was under the impression that bass had to be clean. always.
Wasn't til I listened to this song did I realize you can do whatever the hell you want with any instrument.

But I'd have to agree that Spirit in the Sky is the first killer fuzz tone I heard.

I'm glad that SPirit in The Sky Showed up! For me It was either that or The Rolling Stones "Satisfaction." Cause I had a mom who played the oldies station, sheesh, where did you kids grow up?

I heard those but they didn't blow my mind... actually I listened to Jimi a lot before too but all those sounded like music vs something that just sounded broken and destroyed

Re: That first fuzz tone you remember
Before I got into pedals and fuzz I never really thought of many fuzz tones as "fuzz tones," they were always just guitar to me. I thought distortion was normal, I guess.
But the first fuzz sounds that really grabbed me and made me curious were from the Nine Inch Nails catalog, especially the synth sounds. I liked how the synths on NIN records didn't sound like many other synth sounds I had heard before. Then I started researching the gear Trent/the band used and that's how I found out about Devi and that's why I'm here

Do The Evolution is probably the only Pearl Jam song I like. I can never stop watching the video over and over. And I always thought that part at 1:06 was so dirty.

yeah, i watched that video on MTV a long ass time ago. that fuzz sound with death, strobe light go-go dancing seemed pretty raunchy to me.
total stimulation for the eye hole and the ear hole. i loved it.

totally this. i do remember being really fascinated by the gnarly blown out fuzz/distortion on the early Pavement records. i was already playing in bands by then, and i remember thinking "how the hell did they get that sound?"

The first guitar tone that directly stuck out to me and made me think "damn, that sounds fucking mean." was "Bodies" by The Smashing Pumpkins. I think I was in 8th grade when I re-listened to that song and identified with how aggressive the tone was.

Re: That first fuzz tone you remember
the first fuzz i noticed was probably "Satisfaction" or more likely the early adopters at Motown, who had a charmingly King Tubby-esque "let's throw everything in the studio at it and see how it works" aesthetic in the days before Diana blew up. the first fuzz i wanted to emulate was Disraeli Gears and Axis: Bold As Love. much of my aesthetic over the years came from people who used huge amps cranked for distortion if they used anything more than raggedy amp OD at all--Jerry Garcia, Stills and Young, Pete Townshend, Richard Thompson, The Edge--so my fuzz obsession really began with Hüsker Dü and MBV.
