I have a no-name archtop guitar with GFS Retrotron pickups that does a very close approximation to the Gretsch tone. It's something to think about if you want that sound on a budget. I think they are about 40 bucks each.

Buy Gretsch, if it's made in the USA, You probably won't regret later. When You've paid for it. Buy a foreing cheapo Gretsch, if it's a good one, so be sure to test it first.

the modern Gretsches built at the Terada plant in Japan are fantastic guitars. the Chinese-made Electromatics are better than Epiphones in fit/finish.
