The reason I posed the question is that on Friday, I used $296 of a $300 MF gift card to buy a guitar.
This morning I decided to get a case for it and when I typed in the the gift card # to use the remaining $4
it put my whole $80 total on the gift card and said that I still had $220 remaining.

I was tempted to place the order and see what would happen.

I ended up paying for the whole order through Paypal and calling MF to see what was up.

If I go to use the remaining $4 a couple of weeks from now and they say the card still has $300
on it, I might feel more justified in using it since I already informed them of the problem. :idk:

Related story:
A couple of years ago my street address was 2809 but Cumcast had it as 2890 (which didn't exist) for some reason.
When I canceled my cable service they never actually shut it off.
I called 4 times to tell them they needed to come shut it off and every time they informed me
that they didn't have a 2809 that was receiving service.

On the 4th call I just put the phone up to the TV during "Pardon the Interruption" and said
"Do you hear that? That's Mike Wilbon. That's fucking cable TV." and hung up.

I'll admit when I was a teenager I used to download pirated music and I still feel pretty shitty about doing it. With YouTube and Spotify you don't even really need to do it anymore, and I try to support bands I like by purchasing their music/merch.

I don't think stealing is acceptable but I've never been in a desperate situation where it was steal or starve. I donate a lot of food to the local shelters so I really hope no one should have the need to steal in order to survive. I was tempted last christmas after the bank mistakenly put 5 grand in my account. It would have been extremely useful since student loans are killing me but I would have felt rotten about it, so I called and told them of their error.

If a big box store gives me back too much change, I'll keep it. If it's a small place, I won't. The chances of me noticing are pretty slim either way, though.

One time, I canceled an order at Smallbear and they sent me the order anyways, and I told them about it so I could send their stuff back. But, when I sent a camera in to get it fixed, they shipped it back with a new battery and I didn't bother with anything past "w00t! free battery!" I also kinda just dropped the camera, and sent it in just saying it was broken without any more details. Dunno if they would have fixed it under warranty otherwise. I don't necessarily think that's "right", but I'd be lying if I said I felt any kind of guilt.

I do download music sometimes, or just get it on Youtube or something. Which I also don't think is right, but I couldn't afford much of it anyhow. I do try and go to concerts and buy merch to make up for it, which is really just paying for one thing instead of another...

So, yeah. I dunno. There's obviously different levels, but I never really think it's "right." It's just not enough to break my guilt threshold.

Yup, I'm not in favour of stealing. When I was quite a bit younger I did some very minor shoplifting, like I'd buy two things and put a chocolate bar in my pocket or something, because my friends were doing it and "it was ok because it was only ever from big company-owned shops", but I quickly grew out of that and stopped stealing is wrong, yo. I also downloaded a whole bunch of music illegally, but I got rid of loads of that (admittedly it helped that my tastes have changed a fair bit) and bought a bunch of stuff that I'd previously downloaded.

I still do download some music, but now very rarely and mostly when I can't find a place to buy it new (I figure since buying used cds doesn't benefit the band anyway you may as well download it :idk: ), because supporting artists that I like makes me feel good and helps them to keep making music I want to hear. And eat and stuff.

Do still have pirated software... Not games, but stuff I use for uni which is kinda expensive/technically not available for purchase by individuals afaik but me having a copy is definitely not covered under the uni license. :erm:

Stealing is wrong, but I can justify doing it. I still know what I'm doing is wrong and feel "bad" for it. Same with smoking pot, it's against the law, although I enjoy it, but I still know what I'm doing is wrong. I just don't care to a certain extent.

it's easier for me to get past the moral thing with drugs because hey, i LIKE drugs. and there's the "victimless crime" thing too. but the knowing-its-wrong thing is there for me even after 40 years. this, i suppose, is one of the reasons i'm not Lemmy.

not that i don't like things that i could steal, but i won't. i don't download music other than live concerts/outtakes/archival stuff which are available legally from the various DL sites like archive.org, DimeADozen, etc.; as someone who'd ideally like to get paid for my own shit someday, it'd be hypocritical to steal other peoples' work. if i want to sample music, i look for it on YouTube. i just feel better that way.
