Although I do like The Mars Volta and most of Omar's solo stuff.

But progressive rock is totally an album-centered style of music. If you want some great deep cuts, pick up Tarkus by ELP and Tales From Topographic Oceans by Yes.

Opeth's Damnation

God, this record is the fucking worst. Do yourself a favour and avoid. Deliverance is fucking great. Most of Opeths output is pretty awesome but this is as bad as Heritage. Buy yourself Watershed instead.

So much great progressive rock out there - newer stuff you should look into Black Bonzo from Sweden, all three of their records are killer. Orne from Finland, etc. But alsointeresting stuff is being done in "prgressive death metal" like Obscura for example, Stargazer.... maybe Gorguts will release a new album? Get real.....

Old stuff, the classics are classics for a reason. ELP up to Works Vol. 1 (particularly Tarkus, S/T, Trilogy, Pictures, BSS, Fanfare For The Common Man), Yes up to Going For The One, Rush (Hemispheres and Farewell To Kings are the best records EVER), Van Der Graaf Generator, the Italian scene, Zeuhl, the Swedish scene, Finnish stuff like Wigwam..... Spring had a great S/T album that's a little on the softer side.....

Personally I've never been as crazy about the Canterbury scene, Camel and Caravan were some pussy assed jams... but Egg and some of the Soft Machine albums are noteworthy.

Yeah, I was more leaning towards modern heavier 'prog' stuff which I see more as just metal in weird time signatures (so, older prog with more distortion and screaming...) than actual progressive interesting music when I was criticising the genre name. It's kind of annoying that it's come to signify the wankery like you said when really a whole host of great artists could easily be called prog but aren't. Which sounds kind of the opposite of what I was saying earlier so I'm not sure where I'm going with this...

Either way King Crimson are rad.

I thought Damnation was great and Deliverance was boring other than one or two tracks...and Watershed was their worst album by a long shot I haven't heard Heritage yet though, so I can't say either way on that one. Totally with you on Gorguts though

Mainly much newer stuff. Lots of Porcupine Tree kinda started this. Opeth's Damnation, BTBAM, bands like Scale the summit, all kinda contributed too. I've never really listened to bands like Rush to be honest.

The Mars Volta are really great modern prog. Most people tend to prefer their older stuff, but Amputechture and The Bedlam in Goliath are the standouts for me.

As for modern prog/prog metal, I don't really consider BTBAM or Scale the Summit particularly progressive, but I 'spose some people do because of the whole odd time signature thing But, if you dig BTBAM, you might like one of the bands that they rip off a lot, Arcturus. The vocals are really theatrical and can be tough to get used to, but La Masquerade Infernal and The Sham Mirrors are fantastic IMO.

OPETH. Especially the early stuff. Morningrise is becoming a huge favorite if mine by them, the acoustic bits are so folky and beautiful sounding, and the guitars sound so much rawer and aggressive than the later stuff. Same with the album Orchid.

Personally, I love Damnation, it has this beautiful melancholic feel to it that their other material doesn't have. Heritage kinda turns me off, however.
