For basic traditional slapback, hate to say it and save you money but frankly anything will work.

Rogue Analog Delay from MF will do it, they're on sale regularly for $29. Dano, whatever used you can find that doesn't wreck your signal when bypassed.

If you want freaky slapback or slapback with oscillation or whatever, things change.

But if you want generic, I have slapback echo so there...just shop the used cheapie bin.

A Sea Machine is pretty cool and you can turn the pitch warble on and off. Now that I think about it, that's what I would try first if I was a slapbacker.

Isn't the Aqua Puss super famous for it's slapback? If I remember right, it only has 300 something ms delay time, which seems perfect if you're just using it for slapback or reverby stuff.

I feel like 300ms delays excel for the slapback delays. Aqua Puss, Ibanez/Maxon AD9, etc.

I push it in every delay thread, but....
DM-2!
Do it. I don't even like slapback and it set it up for slapback sometimes.
Sounds so good.

Analogman made this mod for some cheap japanese delay a while ago, and it sounded really really good. Ibanez/Maxon 9 series delay is my favorite mass-produced slap-backer, if you can find a roughed up one on the cheap you might be able to get it under your price range.

Guyatone MD3, or the newer one. Super clear delays, will oscillate if you push it, up to 2 seconds of delay (3 way switch to select the interval of the delay time pot). Tiny footprint. It is all sorts of awesome.

greigoroth beat me to it, +1 for the Guyatone MD3. Super versatile and can be had on the cheap. I really regret trading off mine.

At first I didn't really like the slapback sounds on my AD-9 Pro, but that was just because it lets you do such fast delay times that it gets this annoying high frequency ping to the repeats. I realized if you put the delay time around 11 o'clock or so you can get an incredible slapback sound with a nice dark repeat.

I could leave that slapback sound on for just about all of my playing and be happy.

I think pretty much anything will do a decent slapback though. I just picked up a Danelectro PB&J delay for $20 which seems to do an excellent slapback and has a footswitch that takes you from longer delay times into a perfect slapback sound.

I dunno. I think he needs a Timefactor, a DL4 and a Memory Lane 2. That ought to cover all his bases.
