I think Chrome bags are overhyped. They're OK, but I'd rather buy from one of the smaller bag makers. I think it'll be a better all around experience.

I have a
Deuter Futura 28 and I love it. It's 28 liters so it's smaller than a standard backpack, but I've never had any issues with the size. It also comes in a 32 liter size. It might be the best $100 I've ever spent.
One downside is that the framing that keeps your back cool also makes it a bit tricky to store laptops or tablets.
Tom Bihn makes some similar bags that I've been lusting after recently that are better for school and toting a laptop around.

When I was little, I'd put my arms through the handles of plastic bags and pretend they were parachutes. Then jump off of things.
Your super hip plastic bag can also save your life. Don't leave home without it.

Besides, the plastic bags of today can be a significant archeological proof of a human habitat in future, just like nuclear waste and other long lasting stuff. Our cell phones and computers obviously don't qualify.
SO using a plastic bag will make You distinct figure preserving tokens of human culture for future. *insert uplifting brass music*

I had a Herschel last year, the settlement or an equivalent. It was nice and simple, got loads of compliments on it. However, the zipper on the big pocket completely self-destructed during the last week of the spring semester. Luckily I didn't really need it at that point, but it is enough to push me somewhere else now.
Rocking a Manhattan Portage messenger bag right now, but the lack of a stabilizer makes it dangerous on a bike. And the strap is pretty abrasive. But it isn't bad if you were just walking with it.
Right now I'm in the same boat of needing a new bag. Debating between a Mission Workshop or Chrome.

Yeah I'm kind of between Mission and Chrome as well but I feel the Mission Fitzroy would be perfect for me. A little big for just going to class but would be great for picking up a few groceries and for my frequent journeys to Chicago using it as my only bag carrying a couple days worth of clothes and personal items. Now to just flip some gear to afford it. Might wait for my 21st birthday and get it with the predictably large amount of money my rich grandma will most likely give me

The Fitzroy looks a little too big for me, but I'm a pretty small guy. Unfortunately the Sanction is too small for my Mac. So that leaves the Rummy. Which is cool because I prefer a messenger bag over a backpack anyways. Either way a rolltop is a big plus on all of the MW stuff. I've got a Topeak bag for my bike when I need it, but it's not as easy to carry around as a shoulder bag. Occasionally one of these things pops up on eBay, so check there often.
A few people around here have Chrome bags. The problem with them is that the strap is not interchangeable between left and right. And the lack of a rolltop. They are easier to find secondhand though...
Decisions, decisions.

Can I ask why you prefer the messenger style? I've only used backpacks so I'm curious but nervous to make the change.
