I would suggest the Weber Chicago but it's only 80w.
The Eminence Legend 1518 is a really nice all around speaker and it's pretty cheap too!

BTW, Not to hijack the thread, but did you swap the speaker in the excelsior yet?

It's been 110 degrees F at the practice space for the last month so not yet.
I have a 215 with the Eminence Legend 1518's and another 215 with Weber Michigans.
I'm going to plug it into those first to get a better idea of what I should use for the Excelsior.

Sorry to bump maybe the wrong thread.
MEC, any update on your side regarding the change of the speaker in the Excelsior.
I have this speaker in a reduntant cab:
http://celestion.com/product/9/bn15300s/ (uh fuck, that is maybe the wrong one. I have to look in the cab... And i forgot about the matching Ohms... )
Thinking about trying this one. Not sure how much hassle the speaker change is.... Have to look at the back of Excelsior again...

No, I've just been getting along with the stock speaker.
I only use the Excelsior at home, for practice, so I can darken it with pedals and not worry about
what it would sound like in a mix.
I still think the Weber Michigan would be the way to go if you are trying to darken it up and tame the highs.

Swapping the speaker will require you to remove both of the chassis. The biggest obstacle to the new speaker
fitting in the Excelsior is the magnet size. If it is too big it won't clear the power tubes.

Thank you.
Yeah, pretty much the same here, i use it at home right now with the Pharao or the dark horse and it sounds pretty good for practice. I should try it with another cab but i read that the main character comes from the amp and not the speaker...

Ancient Astronaught needs to get up in this thread! I'm thinking he also prefers the Big Ben tho...

Ok, since we talked in this thread about it: i changed the speaker in the Excelsior the other day.
Image
What speaker did i choose? A celestion bass guitar speaker that i choose some years ago because of the sensitivity to update an existing cab i had. Threw the cab couple months ago away (was stinky 70ies shit - not the good one though) and kept the speaker. Thought it was 16 or 4 Ohm but it is a 8 Ohm one so it fit for the Excelsior.
Excelsior sounds a lot better with this speaker, also a bit louder and "faster" (if that makes sense to anyone else than me). The Amp is on the normal setting now well balanced and not overly bright anymore. Works pretty good now with bass or guitar. The direct bass sound is quite cool (if anybody is interested, in the EFE Black Acid thread i posted a file with bass where the clean sound is also audible in the demo clip). I really dig it.
Final thought: Excelsior is a great amp that has a shitty speaker in it. I think the speaker is really the main problem. MEC and i swapped tubes on the stock Excelsior and nothing was audible. I think that will change now with the new speaker (tests to come when i find some time). The stock speaker def. has just this one sound that is overly trebly. So i promote to swap the speaker.

They're my favorite with old Fender stuff if I want 15".

A lot of folks were big on upgrading to the Emi Legend in the Excelsior and I gather that Fender is using those in the custom color models that it's pushing now.

When I get around to swapping the speaker on my Excelsior it will probably be for the Michigan.
I just have to make sure it will fit in there first.

German thomann wepage says "Weber 15". And normally they are pretty precise with specs.

BTW, anybody want the original speaker for Free? Just have to Pay the shipping cost.
