It's not a filter, but BEZfx makes an expression-controlled phaser that's pretty cool. He may have insight into how to make a controllable filter.

Also, Wilson Effects makes amazing wahs and has a great reputation for customer service and one-offs. He might be willing to build you an expression-controlled filter pedal.

Failing that, you may need to get a builder to mod an auto-filter to make it manual.

That's what I was gonna suggest. Either get somebody to rehouse a synth module or get one custom built into a stompbox enclosure.

That way you'll get exactly what you want.

Yeah, I figured as much. Was really hoping there'd be something in production, though!

Robot Factory Brain Freeze is exactly what you're looking for. It's the filter module from a Korg MS-20 in a pedal, and the cutoff can be controlled by the knob, by CV, or by expression. It's not envelope controlled.

Unfortunately, I've heard some crappy stuff about Mario from Robot Factory flaking out and shit. Maybe try to find one used somewhere?

Also, the Frostwave Resonator is basically the same exact fucking thing, but Frostwave stopped making pedals a few years ago, so used is the only way to go for that one, too.

If there's anyone here who would know about filters, it's BigchiefBC. Trust in the man's wisdom. He has done the research for us all.

Paul Perry of Frostwave runs a second-hand bookstore here in Melbourne. A friend of mine went in and told him how much Resonators were going for on the second-hand market - a beat passed before he replied 'shit, I probably should've kept one'.

yah. the Brain Freeze is SO GOOD.

i dunno on guitar, but on bass i love the IE Xerograph too. it does have an envelope follower, but you can plug in an expression pedal and bypass that. i'm with you, i don't like envelopes that much. quak waka waka doesn't do much for me.

SoniDUDEero, what's your problem with filters?

Pretty much any effects pedal you run your signal through is a filter of one sort or another.

We've had umpteen threads about Filters on Guitars and no one can ever give me an example or explain what they mean... It's just "I wanna play my guitar through a synth filter, how"... I'm asking what the end goal is or a name or a song or something... jeeezzzz...

:wha?: Tim Gane fr. Stereolab used to run his guitar signal through a Sherman Filterbank. :D

It really shits me when people assume that the desire for a certain piece of equipment is motivated by the cultural detritus that surrounds it. Yes, there are a lot of people that bought old Big Muffs because Billy fucking Corgan used one (digression: I bought a Big Muff because I wanted to sound like Bardo Pond) but there are plenty of people who just happen to like how they sound. I don't have an end goal, in that I'm not trying to emulate any particular musician or realise some sound rattling around in my head - but I've fucked around enough with resonant filters on guitar to know that I enjoy the sound, and the resultant effect that it has on my playing. Furthermore, I don't want to drag around a cumbersome and expensive synthesiser setup to a show when I'm already carting around a guitar, two amps and a backpack full of miscellaneous crap. That's why I'd like a filter in a pedal.

plus, they sound FUCKING RAD.
manual (non-LFO) and LFO swept filters can do wonderful things to a signal...
want to get a sound like the synth bass on radiohead's "climbing up the walls"? - sweep a LPF manually or with an expression pedal
want to get an old-timey AM radio sound? - BPF with the right setting
stuck wah sounds? - BPF
want to do a really brittle high sweep on a drum loop then drop the beat like pauly D? - sweep a HPF
want to play dub reggae? - LPF
bootsy collins? - envelope controlled filter
METALZ? - wide-band notch filter (ie SCOOPED MIDZ)
phasers, comb filtering, filtering on echos, filtering on drives/fuzzes, etc, etc, etc, etc. ALL FILTERS! maybe not all resonant VCFs, but still filters.

pretty much every electronic musician on the planet uses resonant filters in some way, so if you like ANY electronic music then chances are you've heard a filter being used in a cool or even just utilitarian way.
