Ahhha Adventure Time.

I'm not too knowledgable about this stuff at all, but I got this app called funkbox based on some recommendations here and I've had a lot of fun with it. It's a little sequenced drum machine thing. Sounds really cool and it's easy to use and cheap!

I just come from years of buying and trying and watching trends come and go and electronic music is serious to me... I get upset when people think you buy a groovebox push play and your done... There are a thousand and one pieces of equipment that can be used and suggesting an Electribe is like telling someone who is "interested" in guitar to go get a paperjamz guitar or some guitar hero...

That is all...

I dunno man...groovebox or not, you can make shit music on anything. You can push play on the Electribe and turn out shit no problem, but for me at least, it doesn't even sound good until I spend time tweaking everything. I think it's a pretty versatile and decently easy to use tool for someone who's just getting started. It can be had for less money than getting a handful of other things. And it doesn't have to be hunted down or repaired, hopefully.
I use it more as a synth than a drum machine though...maybe it's a little backwards but I'm interested in using it outside of its OONTZ OONTZ context. The EMX isn't limited to the shit you see on youtube, guys wanking around just like those idiots with Boss RC-2s or the millions of public masturbators showing off their blooz licks.

But yes there is lots and lotsa gear out there.

A little elitist, no? The Electribe is a perfectly viable instrument to create music with. Are there better options out there? Of course, just like with every other instrument, but some people like myself either dig the interface, like the price-point, or both.

I have had an Electribe EMX, i dug it. I didn't play stringed instruments for a bit. It was the only thing that kept me connected with music for awhile. It can do some cool stuff. If it wasn't the only piece of noise making gear that I had, I probably wouldn't have learned as much about it.
BUT, these days I dig Maschine. I think it is the total package for sampler/sequencer/drummachine/song maker.
It is pretty deep software and the hardware is great too. NI has done a lot of updates, they listen to the peole that use Maschine and keep making it better.

Muff Wigglers in their General section is a good place to learn about sequencers from elite electronic music nuts. Muff's is primarily about modular synths, so those guys are crazy and have seen it all. Really cool community and very knowledgeable. Deep GAS roots.

I have an Elektron Octatrack, which is probably the most overbuilt drum sequencing machine In The World. Well, at least in the X0X style sequencer vein. MPC and their type are more robust, but much more complicated and primarily for actually recording your drum hits on the pads. Two very different approaches, X0X and MPC. If you don't know what I mean by X0X, the Roland TR-808, 909 and 606 established that standard.

The Octatrack is really meant to be an all purpose sampler and geared towards chopping up whole musical phrases and layering, rearranging, transposing, etc. them. But I use it as a drum machine. Awesome interface, super powerful. They are going for about $1050 used lately, so not cheap, but unless you want straight analog sound creation, I don't think it can be beat.
