IF you want a fuzzy tone, not an overdrivey tone, I can't agree more with bigchief on this one. HOTdog will make your guitar sound HUUUUUUUGE.

I had been trying to sell off my Way Huge Fat Sandwich, but after messing around with it over the past few days, I'm keeping it. It's not as knobby and tweakable as the Elements, but it's pretty damn tweakable. Just sayin'.

I can get overdrivey out of my HOTDog. Just set the gate all the way up. the hair most of the way down, and the mix about halfway, you get a nice big hairy overdrive.

As a matter of fact, it is my main overdrive now, when I want something dirtier than just my amp.

Mmmm. Yes. Good point. It's such a versatile and overlooked pedal. When I first got it, I was concerned it wouldn't have the range of tone I wanted, but the different mixtures of the blend and hair knobs take care of that surprisingly well.

Just popping in to reiterate that Swans heavy comes from the expansiveness of their instrumentation.

Fender and a Mesa. And lots of cymbals. And clanky bass.

When I saw them, they where using Orange and MusicMan amp.
Probably changed during the tour.

They where very loud. Awesome show.

Thank you everyone, thank you so much! :!!!: You all have been the greatest help imaginable, I have so many options to choose from I'm so excited! I'm gonna see if I can get my hands on most of them to play before I make my purchase. I would rely on my amp's drive but it's more of a clean monster and I don't really want to switch amps at the moment. So, this is perfect!

What amp do you have?

Swans guitar sound is not nasty or brutal.
Just a regular overdrive.

^ On this vid, it's a MusicMan amp plugged into the Mesa cab.

Monarch is not what I think of when I hear "brutal." Great Orange-y overdrive for sure, but not a high gain monster.
Some great recs in this thread--you might also consider a Buzzaround clone or a Blackout Blunderbuss.
Special low-frequency version.
