Every guitar tone I've recorded recently was with the rusty box running the di seems to work well.

Yeah the Rusty Box has intrigued me, didn't know how well it would work for guitar though.

So right now I'm considering putting money towards a preamp with DI outs
or
Putting my money towards a new Macbook and using Logic's amp modeling along with my pedals

i wrote it somewhere else already (but don't find it anymore): i had good results with a tube-based pedal driving a behringer DI Box with 4x12 speaker sim. My normal pedal board was in front. The tube based pedal added that amp-ish character to all.

What's a rusty box?

I might have several of them already...

Well I tried direct in through my mixer and was not blown away the fuzz just seemed to lose its balls and there was a definite top end sizzle and getting rid of it with the eq on the mixer made everything sound muffled :(
I wish it was next Friday and I could get my paycheck, I'd spring for that Magma pre in bst.
