You're welcome. I've never used contact mics (yet) but I have recorded some acoustic guitar with a cheapo condenser mic. I got a set of two MXL condensers (one shotgun style, the other "room" style or whatever). You just have to mess with where to aim the mic to get the sound you want. Or you could look for one of those clip-in acoustic pickups. I haven't tried that, yet though. Also, if you go the condenser route, keep in mind that room sounds will be picked up a lot more. That's why I go with the shotgun condenser.

I agree with this too. Best sounds nearer to the edge of the speaker cone, though you should really experiment and see where you get the sounds you like most.

Edit: The only snag I've hit with the method I outlined is that sometimes the tones you want just don't happen unless your amp is turned up a bit. Recording is a lot of experimentation.

This. You can get sick as fuck sounds by accident.

Well where should i start... 3,5 years of experience here...

1) get at least some USB interface that uses ASIO

2) i recommend mic'ing up... i used to work with impulses, but nothing replaces a mic'd up guitar for me. With bass i still work with impulses since i don't have a bass amp

3) have time to do it. be prepared to spend the whole day to record a song and DON'T be ashamed of the fact you'll record some part a thousand times... it sometimes takes time to get things right, especially when the red button is on

4) don't forget to eat and drink... as i've forgotten like 3 times already and after a whole day recording session i went like "wait a minute..."

5) be open to experimenting, but don't forget about the usuals... like double/triple tracking... you can still have fun with it

6) take time to mix and EQ it... good thing is, you can do it at night.

7) get some good VSTs for EQing, compressing and shit... get some kind of spectral analysis thing... it can guide you and make things easier

8) save everything
