I built one before. It was neato. Wish I would have put a switch for the octave effect. Great mid-sy Muff sound without the octave engaged.

I have a phantom octave and love it!

I've owned about 20 octave fuzzes in the last years, trying to find the perfect bass octave fuzz. Scrambler, Bassmaster, Octavia, etc etc.

Nowadays, I'd surely go for a good superfuzz (Wattson, early MJM) o something similar like the Super Puzzle, or a Brassmaster (Malekko and Black Cat are slightly different but both really good), or a Fender Blender.

On the market you can find other pedals that are really good but only in combination with other dists or boosts, in order to preserve the lows: Dwarfcraft Shiva, Seppuku OctaveDrone...

I love Joe's tone. Fucking LOVE IT. I know that he's got a decent amount of tone coming out of the giant boss multi that he uses, but the Super Fuzz is like the icing on the cake

In a similar note, the Verellen Big Spider is the closest I have ever gotten to Joe's tone

another question...

the guitarist in my band (we're a three piece) uses a Boss Super Octave OC3 through a Orange TH100, Big Muff and Marshall 1960b 4x12. He leaves it on during all of our songs (not my idea)... we're tuned in drop A and I don't use any sort of octave pedal, I plug straight in for bass. My question is... were Octave pedals meant to be used for chords or single notes? he plays chords and I'll play the same thing on bass and it SOMETIMES sounds out-of-tune or wonky. I feel dumb asking this because I know that an Octaver puts your guitar sound an octave up or down etc. He just doesn't believe that it sounds weird sometimes (depending on the note/chord) and I need clarification.

They tend to track better with single notes, but can do alright with simple power chords too. Listen to (and with) your ears though. If you like (or dislike) the way it sounds that should be the answer to your question.
