throw shit at me for this... but I played through a Marshall vintage modern once... and... liked it... Takes pedals surprisingly well and if you play with the eq functions a little bit you can get it to sound pretty dark and boomy... not trebley at all. I kinda dig the eq features of that thing too... with the preamp 2-band eq thing and the main eq... very versatile.
and of course... switch it to the "modern" settings and trebly rectified distortion pours out of your speakers.

I would quite like to try the Vintage/Modern.

I love my 50 watt non master volume 1987X. Sounds great with pedals. I have a JCM800 combo that is cool too. Old two hole, non channel switching version. The JCM 900 however, is best forgotten. Shudder...

One of my favorite bands (ETID) has basically always used the Les Paul > TS9 > Marshall (usually JCM800s) setup.
I love that sound, but I've never heard much clean Marshall, that I know of, and I need a useable clean.

the Kerry King JCM800 has decent headroom. It uses KT88s in the power section, which I'm pretty sure is a mod that our favorite Pumpkin smasher used to up the clean headroom of his Marshall in teh day.

Just don't use the noise gate. I'm pretty certain it engages a gain boost as well.

iunno.

whatever Frank plays in Nights, and J Mascis play is fine by me.

otherwise I dig plexis. Marshalls just seem like one of those pieces of gear that are "eh" untweeked, but really good when tweeked.

I don't know if any of yous post on HCFX, but a guy over there plays an Esquire (single coil pickup, too) through two Super Leads (at least that's what I think they are). Uses a poop ton of dirt pedals as well as some other stuff.

I think it's pretty crushing.

Everytime I play through a JCM 900 I throw up a little bit inside my mouth...

I play a Top Hat Emplexador MKII, which is basically a plexi/jcm800 in two separate channels. It's not quite a Fender-esque sparkle but the clean sounds are way better than I expected them to be, nice and thick and really anything but "cold". Treble isn't a problem either, even though it probably should considering my main guitar is a Jaguar, but I get really nice clarity even when the gain and master controls are dimed. FWIW I run it through a Marshall 1960 Lead 4x12", with G12-T75s, although I have a set of Scumback M75s on order because apparently Greenbacks are how Plexis roll.

Basically, it's loud, punchy and takes pedals as well as any amp I've tried. :idk: No problems here! :thumb:

My 1987X which I had modded to 60's plexi specs has nice cleans. No complaints about clean sound at all. Sounds great with pedals too.

I'm playing a Bugera 1960, which is a clone of the 1959 Super Lead. The bright channel is piercingly bright, but the normal channel sounds fantastic. Good EQ balance, loud as fuck, and you can daisy-chain the two channels for more gain. I've considered getting it modded to Super Bass specs, but not sure I need it, it has tons of bass as is.

Also, my home practice amp is a JTM-30, which has a tube preamp and a hybrid dealy tube/solid-state power section. The clean channel sounds awesome, the dirty channel sounds poopy. The clean channel cranked up until it gets dirty is heavenly.

This concludes the extent of my Marshall amp knowledge.

I've been looking at the Morgan 30/800 for a while now, though I cannot afford one any time soon. Dustin Kensrue used one on the last Thrice album in place of his usual AC30 (which is what I'm using now).
Any other notable builders doing Marshall circuits out there? I thought I saw Dunwich dude post something about doing a Marshall style custom.

You can clip, or change, the treble bleed cap on the bright channel to reduce the highs and smooth it out. Really easy mod.

Sovtek Mig100's are marshall clones, as are the old Peavey Butchers. Bugera, as mentioned earlier...

If you're talking custom stuff, I can't imagine there'd be a builder who wouldn't do it custom--those circuits are world famous for a reason, and any builder worth his/her shit (who does custom stuff, I know there are some who just do their own designs) should be able to help ya.
