the only reason i'm not saying anything about the Marr Jaguar is because i stuck to stuff i've played myself. i don't feel like i should recommend guitars i haven't actually played.
it strikes me that if you're interested in a Tokai Les Paul Special, a Gibson Les Paul Special is within your budget...they've got very nice vintage RIs that list around $2200 with the correct wraparound bridge/tailpiece that should go out the door at around $1600-1700.

I actually got my hands on a Marr Jag last week. Very nice guitar, but Jags just aren't for me. It made me realize I'm definitely a JM guy.
If you're into Jags though, you probably can do no better than the Marr model.

A few months ago I checked around for prices from all the US dealers and
http://www.broadwaysound.net/ was the cheapest by far.

The one I linked to, was the only one I got a quote on and from Broadway Sound it was $1550 shipped with a hard shell case.
MusicMart quoted me $1800 + shipping for the same thing. I assume these differences would be consistent across the Maton line.
They are cheaper in OZ but you get killed on the shipping.
