If you really get into recording you will find mics can be like pedals...

Yup. The older the better to, just make sure it works before you buy it...

I've got 57's, e609's and I5's.... i prefer the I5's to 57s and e609's to both.... but i also like to partner them with a ribbon mic for best effect. I also really like the Audix f14 (technically a floor/kick mic but does wonders on low tuned bass heavy guitars, i  this mic for some unknown reason) but they actually go for more than a used 57 or i5....

These are awesome and are usually around 100 dollars used.

Both the 57 and 58 are cardiod pattern mics. The unidyne is omnidirectional.

FWIW, right now you can get GC to price match against Best Buy of all people and get a 57 for $75. Did it last night cause it was too good of a deal to pass up.

Ended up getting two 57's and a 58 from SPACERITUAL!! I'm pretty stoked. Going to set one up on the cone, one a foot or so back, and then one in the room for good measure

You can a either get a huge sound from this or a thin wall of phase problems... Have a loop or something playing through the amp(s) and with headphones on position the mics starting with the first one on the grill then go back... You'll start to hear where the phase areas and the sweet spots are... I could do it all day... pluggin in mics now...

Will do! Thanks for the tip man. I really need to solidify a date in a room that I can get loud in. I want it to sound massive

Don't point the microphone at the center of the speaker, put it 2 or 3 insches away from the center and then point it back towards the center, this is all against the grill. I'd check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2H0cxCKg2UY&feature=plcp&context=C3293143UDOEgsToPDskL1-BFPSyMmXU6xNRJWJ6RD

It really shows how moving the mic even an inch or two from the speaker can really affect the sound you get, also it compares the 57 to the i5.

Yep, but there's an audible, if subtle, difference.

on the other hand, it's not like there's a very good reason to buy new from any of 'em anyhow. :idk:

So much this. Multimicing anything can get hairy, but amps are especially difficult for some reason.
Also, depending on your DAW, it's way easier to phase-align tracks after recording. For three mics, takes fifteen seconds instead of five or ten minutes. Time you should be spending twistin' knobbies, not moving mics. :snax:

The capsule and body of 57's and 58's are identical...one is marketed for instruments and one for vocalists...if you end up using a 58 to mic a cab just unscrew the grill and take out the little foamy...

Rather than buy new check out the local pawn shops...57's withstand almost anthing...even a beaten up old piece of shit is usually gonna sound pretty decent...

Buying a mic is the first step...unless you have proper isolation you can't really hear exactly what youare recording, position and degree are vital. Your amp could have the deepest gnarliest growl but if the mic placement is wrong it's gonna sound like afart in a tin can. Take your time and play with it...always listen to the playback...

Speaking of pawn shops...look for the 20 dollar specials. The are some vastly under rated beauties out there to be found...just cause it's old and looks like shit doesn't mean it's not worth a try...

If what you want to capture is kinda doomy...try a close positioned 57 blended with either a Neuman u87 (or clone) or a kick drum mic...all the bottom comes throug nice and strong plus all the grit a 57 has to offer...
