If you've follow any of this saga over the years, Mark Hammer has stated (on which forum I can't recall) that it's a completely redesigned/re-engineered circuit. Sonically similar, but completely different in execution. I'm pretty sure that qualifies as somewhat more than slight. Apparently it was impossible to fit the existing circuit into a smaller enclosure. Oh, the complexities of manufacturing.

Oh, yeah. To answer Behndy's question. I think there was a bass version available at one time, tuned specifically for lower frequencies. Who knows how that'll be addressed with the redesign? Maybe the new version will have a wider frequency response allowing for use with both bass and guitar?

I haven't at all, and that's actually pretty cool (I assumed he did less), and explains why it took ages. Well done him I guess, I'm interested to hear this/see the price.

Yeah, it's such a saga.

Why is pedal building filled with drama?

I'm waiting for someone to write a rock opera.

"Klonrophenia" . But there is no way that homely red box can compete with a Vespa as eye candy. A Mod on a Vespa is a sort of man-machine Centaur.

I don't care about the aesthetics all that much, or any of the other drama around the Klon. All I can say is that I will definitely be buying one. It just seems like a good idea to run one of these through the TB channel of a cranked AC30.

Why is everyone sounding like they are on board with this? Isn't it just a clean boost? Or is it actually an OD? Even if it is an OD, then what the fuck, this forum isn't called I Love Overdrive....

Here's the deal with the pedal; it is a super rare and very sought-after pedal. The builder used to interview the people who wanted to buy it to make sure they were going to use it as intended before making them one. The demand for them skyrocketed, driving the price through the roof. It is so sought after that even clones of the damn thing fetch upwards of 200+ dollars.

In the order of full disclosure, I'm slightly interested if for nothing else the allure of the damn thing. However, if the price is not right, I'll take my money elsewhere.

But... that same circuit will fit in to a smaller enclosure than they're using now, it will EASILY fit in to the one he's using now, he has some mojo thing about 'the layout changing the tone' which ignoring small capacitative differences is horse shit.

I'm sure it's great for the amps/style it's meant for but it is nothing special and the whole 'the diodes I use are super spethial' thing, from what I read, most people hate the clipping side which is where those diodes are used and if you use germanium diodes with the same fV I bet most people could not hear a difference anyway.

Not dissing it, but he's a bit of a golden ears sales man and if we use as much fuzz as we say we do, our ears are too fucked to hear that difference.

No, you're right to some extent. He's definitely a bit of a salesman. Maybe more than a bit? Some people claim abilities that they don't necessarily possess. Hearing minute differences? Eh, maybe. Is it the best? To some people it is. It's all so subjective.

Those diodes aren't anything special, but they're what the circuit is based around. Does that make them special? IDK? This wouldn't be the only case where a run of the mill part dictates other component choices. Sometimes designers find something that works out well for some unknown reason and to change it affects everything else adversely. Layout changes do, however, affect sonics. You might not think so, but that part's true.

NOT FOR ILF? ILF ears are too blown out?

I don't think the old PCB would've fit in a smaller enclosure. Have you tried rehousing one?

I have played with a real one only once, and after that I quit my dissin'. The thing has this weird crystalline quality that I haven't really heard in another low gain overdrive that was supposed to be like it. As far as using it live, I don't really see the point. Those nuances are certainly going to be lost in the mix. I know Nels Cline and Lee Renaldo use a Klon, but I have seen both live and could never hear anything very Klonish in their tone. I think this pedal would best be utilized in a recording atmosphere. Otherwise, any run of the mill overdrive will do a fine job for live scenarios. As will most fuzz and distortion boxes. I know it doesn't make a difference whether I'm using a Dano Fuzz or some expensive Tone Bender clone in a live situation that isn't PA'd properly. The crowd can never hear the difference unless it oscillates, clangs, or chirps. Hell, in a live situation I can hardly tell the difference sometimes. :idk:

He's the one that consistently says the diodes are what make the circuit...

Urmm... can you give me your evidence for layout affecting tone? Im sorry I just don't buy it, there's no reason it should, other than what I said about tiny amounts of capacitance, which I doubt any of us can pick up on except when they produce oscillation. You can't just state it as out right truth.

No the old PCB would not fit a smaller enclosure, I mean the circuit would, the circuit will fit a 1590B with a bit of difficulty or a 125B Easily.

Yea, I'm siding with Scruffie who I know has experience in the field of electronics.

i totally side with this.

my recent rediscovery of my FAB distortion only heightens that.

people only really know the difference in my tone live when i start to get all chirpy and gated and fizzy... or when i activate my feedback loop.
