TOOBZ RULE! You are hearing the truth man. There is something magical about some sweating power tubes being pushed hard. I tried the tube preamp route and it was alright. I got an oldtube Univox 100watt head (it used to be IE Taylor's) and was hooked. Now my main gig rig head is a 300 watt Eden tube head. This head is definately a way different flavor than an SVT, it doesn't color my tone. The head can definately snarl but it is a different snarl than the same ol SVT snarl. Either way, I fucking love it.

And I don't think it will be hard to convince a sound man that your cabs need to be mic'd when you let him know that often your pedals into di's will cause devastation to his PA. You could get a DI (post pedals) and a mic by saying
"oh this other cab plays the synth parts that are ummm interwoven in my basses signal chain, total harmonic umm sibalence VU meter snake tweeters"
Or "please run two channels of me and I'll share cat tranquilizers with you."

i always find horse tranquilizers more persuasive. sound peeps roll HARD. yo.

hurm. was kinda hoping for more of a "it's not THAT huge of a difference" for the money aspects at least. durn it.

soooooooo......... does Toob Magick only happen at higher volumes? am i going to still like my Rusty Box going into it or is the whole point of a tooby head to use it's eq section?

for the longest i've gone with the preamp on my pedalboard being my only preamp.

Toobs let more information from your bass through, mostly it sounds fuller and it cuts through better cuz the structure of the sound that has been pumped through the speakers is different. That's how I understood it, someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

Tomorrow I'm tryin' out a Hiwatt 200 clone my friend built. Should sound awesome. I heard a real hiwatt 200 with guitar and it blew stuff away.

i don't think it matters if the venue is very large. perhaps most of the bass would be coming from a di into subs and your stage amp would be more of a monitor? my understanding is that ss has a tighter, more defined sound for bass, which could be an advantage live. but i have an svt vr in my basement that sends waves of bliss through my chest.

I would actually say the opposite, you'd get more info from your bass going solid state especially modern super clean heads. The beauty of tubes is the compression they give the signal, that along with asymmetrical clipping.

I've been a long proponent of tube emulating pres into a SS Mosfet power amp but still went and bought a tube head recently, possibly be using just the power section though along with my Oxford pre. This could be a cheaper option here as well as in see about an old tube slave head/power amp and keep the rusty box for your preamp. I got a Peavey Mace that needs a bit of work and a cab built so I can separate it out from it's combo, that's six 6l6s giving 160 watts. I'm sure one of them or similar would be easy enough to find cheap state side.

Meh is my response. Solid State all the way baby. Could care less about tubes.

.......... i like jWARious's input. because it saves me money.

hurm. well, it IS mostly idle speculation since there's way more shits i need to take care of instead of changing an amp setup i'm super happy with for one i MIGHT be happier with.

but i kinda want to try out a tooby head. i've always loved the Aggy speakers, so i'd probably look at one of their toobahl heads first i guess.

so bypassing the preamp and using one you love still gives up that Toob Booty?

Also the toob ONLY dudes must never have played any full ss sunn/acoustic rigs cause they are hamhocks o' tone therein.

holy motherfuck this, forever this. I love my Sunn for it's meaty toanz.

BUT, a while back, for laughs, I threw my friend's JCM900 on my amp setup to see what it would be like.

I too run the Rusty Box as a pre-, so i know exactly what you're talking about Behnnnnnn, and the thing is, adding the tube amp was a really nice touch. It had a really interesting break-up character. For some layering stuff on a SC EP i did, I used a bunch of fuzz into the JCM into a really bass heavy guitar cab, and it sounded fucking gargantuan.

SO, i've sorta been looking for a 100w guitar head, not to replace my Rusty, but to simply supplement to things. I think you should probably do the same, if anything, for the lulz. Different toanz is different toanz, and tube breakup really is a unique thing, not quite like anything else.

HA HA HA, SUCK IT

But really, just like...look for something on eBay? Or really just something inexpensive. You might luck into something. I have a friend that got a Bogen PA head for like $200 on eBay, and it sounded like the god of hellfire on bass.

I know this may sound wonky but there is an easy way to figure this out, bring your bass and the rusty box into a guitar center and try several configurations. Their used gear site updates are helpful too.

Get in good with some dudes at a music store that has some tube amps and get them to let you bring your rig in to try them out. They may even let you do it off business hours so you can REALY crank the amp / amps.
