you're going to need to pay more than a hundred quid for a good all-purpose recording mic. that usually means condenser. then you have to decide if you want a large or small diaphram--i think large is more versatile. audio-technica gives a lot of bang for the buck. i have a 4050 (expensive), but the 20 series may suit you:

hurm. i have a Shure Beta52 for recording bass, the dooder at GC suggested a Shure Beta 58a for a good room mic. right now just bass and drums, gonna add a guitarist soon hopefully. we talked and because i play a sixer he said the Beta would have a better range at grabbing the low B.

did i get hoodwinked?

I would really reccomend a large diaphragm condenser microphone if you're just recording (the more I think about this). I'd reccomend, since you're on a budget. The Studio Projects B1 large diaphragm condesner, I have one and it adds warmth to any and all instruments I've used it on, it has a 10 and 20 db pad and a high pass filter (which you wouldn't really use but it's nice for other things like vocals). It's $120 and it comes with a shockmount and stuff, which is really cool. It has a cardiod pattern, and is rated at around 130 db before "distortion." That is what I'd reccomend for acoustic bass, that or another large diaphragm condesner, sterlings are really good, especially for the money, mxl's are okay, but not as good as the studio projects or the Sterlings.

Got an email last night from Cascade. They're having a sale, and one of the sales is their V57/M39 bundle. You get 1 large condenser, a stereo pair small condenser, shock mounts, and case for $199. That would be a great/inexpensive way to start off your mic locker.

Also, some pretty good sales on some ribbon mics.

you can get the least expensive of those A-T 20 series mics for hella cheap at Musicians Friend. cheap enough that i've considered picking one up to augment my SM48.

My friend's dad owns Bogner, just sayin :idk: Also, I wouldn't get a sm-48 they have even less gain than a sm-58 which already isn't that much, I'd get a AKG P-5, it ahs much more gain and clarity and also has a supercardiod patter, which is much better for live than a sm-48 or 58 which both ahve cardiod patterns.
