Nirvana hands down. If it weren't for them this place would be full of Motley Crue wannabes and the gear forum would be full of threads like "Which eyeliner suits the color of my eyes best?"

Nirvana, duh. Personally I think Fugazi vs Nirvana is apples vs oranges, but clearly Nirvana's reached many, many more ears than Fugazi ever did.. or ever will. There's a reason for that, and it's got more to do with it than record labels. Nirvana wrote fantastic pop tunes. So do the Foo Fighters. Fugazi's not really into that.
Nirvana's not for everybody, but hey, neither were the (critically acclaimed most important band of all time) Beatles. :P
The Velvet Underground are a very important band, and they're fucking awesome.. but there's no doubt about it that Sgt. Pepper's is a more important record than Velvet Underground and Nico, if only because more people listened to it. Importance in music isn't just what musicians are into, it's also what the general public and critics are into... like it or not.

VU & Fugazi is a good comparison.
Nirvana's influences are more diverse than The Beatles' influences.
Many musical influences eventually filter down into the mainstream (more or less)(in one form or another)(sooner or later).

I'll just say this: When has a rock star ever lead more people to exploring the underground than Kurt Cobain did through his endless plugging of all the bands he admittedly took ideas from?

I think if I was to refine my answer I'd clarify it by saying Nirvana are more influential, but Fugazi are more important. Fugazi proved you could sell a million records without signing to a label. In the "olden days", that was really awesome.
Kind of like that old quote about the first Velvet Underground record only selling a thousand copies, but that every single person who bought it started a band.

fuck nirvana, though all my friends and most of my favourite bands were influenced by them.
the way in which a large amount of musicians/artists conduct themselves would not be the same without fugazi/ian mckaye though

Both bands espoused a message of integrity and passion.
I never would have heard Fugazi without Nirvana.
I would much rather listen to a band that's influenced by Fugazi than one influenced by Nirvana.

Fugazi's D.I.Y. ethic was majorly influential on my own outlook. Fugazi were more important to m'self. But Nirvana, admittedly a pop band (as were the Beatles) reached a lot of people. I would say both are important, in different ways.
So it's like asking which was more important: The discovery of penicillin, or the discovery of hygiene/germs?
Ian McKaye was one of the reasons I picked up a guitar, since he was a singer who's band broke up. Because of folks like him I figured anyone can learn guitar if they put their mind to it. He's also the reason I've never used a compressor, and that guitarwise, I'd be pretty minimal with effects. The stuff I play doesn't sound like Fugazi, but you can be damn certain they're as big a part of what I do as Hedges/Mingus/Deftones, or whoever
Jesus. Now that I think of it, I've only played guitar on one song this year.
ANYWAY.
I enjoy Fugazi.
'Instrument' is some solid viewing.
