I think I fixed it.
I just took another, even closer look at the circuit board and noticed a leg of one of the components was sticking out. I soldered it back in and it seems to be working flawlessly.
My guess is that banging the pedal pushed the component's leg back into contact with the circuit. It also explains why it wouldn't function outside of the case; there was nothing pushing the component back down.
So, hopefully that's the end of this near twenty year old problem.
Massive thanks to all you guys for being nice and helpful and so on. Now I can get on with enjoying the forum... and my pedal, of course.
