lulz. i'm NOT upgrading this thing. if i can't get it to work i'll build one from the ground up or get a better system from Fry's. it only has two ram slots anyways. so i can't just pop i ram, i'd have to replace.

Truth is sound programs do not take up a lot of RAM but they take up a large amount of CPU power as well. By today's standards that is a little on the low end as far as systems go.
Besides that, Intel smokes anything out in the market currently.

Good luck getting a virus from your computer just hanging out... If your really worried about that, get a better antivirus that takes nothing to run. Microsoft security essentials, or Kaspersky. Microsoft fixed a ton of security issues from XP to win7 though. And also they fixed a ton of optimization issues from vista to 7. Not getting viruses is just about being careful where you go on the internet, not allowing unfriendly scripts to run, not downloading from untrusted sources, and using a decent browser.
Put on your tin-foil hat for this one (make sure it's tin, they can still send the waves through aluminum!)

Yeah being careful online is like 90% of what it's about with not getting a virus, but with windows, unless you're awesome about adjusting your firewall all programs automatically have access to the internet without requiring your permission. So if some other computer with a virus on it is just going through ip addresses trying to exploit this weakness, unless you have the security updates that fixed the weakness, or have your firewall set right, you really can get a virus simply by being connected to the Internet with windows. Unless this is something they fixed between xp and 7.

To be honest, yes. The netbook here has an equivalent or faster dual core processor and 2 gigs of RAM.
Win 7 didn't like my old dual core 2.8 very much for anything high performance.
Quad core 3.4 and multiple drives and dedicated video card, no issues. I can run games *while* multitracking.
That said, going back to XP isn't going to solve much; you're going to spend as much on Windows as you would on, say, a CPU/Mobo upgrade that could make a worlds more difference.
I'm also assuming that with a dual-core 1.6 that you're running a single, probably way outdated slow hard drive as well.

urrrrm.... decent hdd's. a 500 gb 7200 rpm system and a 1 tb 7200 data drive. if the RAM upgrade (8 gb's for $40? fuck ME that's cheap.) doesn't fix it, i'm just gonna repurpose this box and buy/put together a better one. this was like $200, and i'm not putting a buncha money into upgrading a cheapo platform.

While you have it open, look at the wattage on the PSU as well; make sure you've got enough for everything included and some leeway for manufacturer "tolerances" and age on the supply.
The $500ish unit you linked would be fine, although truthfully if you have the 2 relatively modern drives already, and case etc., I'd probably just yank the CPU/MB out and just do that for half the price unless you have an immediate need for an outdated box.
But see if memory/etc fixes it.

i know it's a pretty trivial question but it could block your speed: are you running your program(s) as administrator? You know, win7 has some ways to block your stuff if you don't right click on it and "run as administrator"...

yeah, i'm using an admin account.
sigh. put in the 8 gigs of ram (not till late last night. picked up Gears 3 and it DISTRACTED ME), thing started blue screening instead of loading into Windows. too frustrated/tired to deal with it so i crashed, i'll start troubleshooting tonight after work.

Firewire is not very good with PC (better with MAC). You better using USB 2.0 on a PC.

I fucking hate Windows 7. Pretty much the worst operating system ever IMO. It is incredible hard to navigate if you're an EX person and constantly (like 6 fucking times a week) updates!

yeah, i have the auto updates turned off, i just do a big batchy one during downtime every once in awhile.
sylNau - i don't looooooooove Firewire, i just happen to have a pair of Motu 828's that i've used forever and got a good deal on a Digi 003 Rack. i'd REALLY be into a USB 3 interface though.
hurm. yeah. thinking about just frying the cpu and getting some trade in on a bigger better system. this shit is FRUSTRATING. i just want a simple DAW pc. durn it.

I'm using PCI M-Audio interface on Win 7... without latency problem.
But I agree Win7 is not as good as XP. I'm always seraching on Win7.

hurrrrrrm. yah, i've always stayed away from PCI interfaces 'cause sometimes i want to take that interface out to a gig with a laptop. then USB or Firewire kicks those asses.
