Sorry, pet peeve of people who act like Nirvana just fell out of the sky stylistically and had a positive impact. Don't get me wrong, they were a great band. Too good, in fact, they made it look easy and spawned a stagnant generation of copycats and they allowed for Pearl Jam to be popular(

). My point, they were at the tail end of good "alternative rock" not the beginning. There were plenty of good music they drew from(in a positive way) that led up to Grunge. It just hasn't been obsessed over by lame gen. X'ers to such a pointless degree.
Seriously, Generation X, you guys grew up to be so lame and boring.

Nirvana may not have been completely stylistically original but neither were Dinosaur Jr. or the Pixies.
Sonic Youth wasn't necessarily all that original either they just blended genres for a unique sound.
The reason it seems as if Nirvana "came out of nowhere" is information was not as available or instant as it is now.
Today if a friend or blog suggest a band you can be listening to them in seconds. In the early 90's it might take months to go from hearing about to actually hearing a band.
Your choices were wait for them to come on tour and hope that you saw a flyer when they did or send for a mail order catalog and mail order from that when you finally got it.
Some record stores had a decent selection but that was highly dependent on where you lived.
Nirvana was a gateway to bands like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur JR. and the Pixies and a big reason for their success.
In summation, these are all great bands who benefited from each other in various ways.
