reading on the R.E.M. wiki page that their sales are near U2s made me look up U2 and made me realize that they rip off some fucking awesome bands like Joy Division and Television and Siouxie and now i don't know what to do with my life.

I think tense is important in this post. People GAVE a flying fuck about R.E.M. because they MADE great music. All in the past. The music is still around(and IS great), but who really cares about what these guys are doing now? Few bands really maintain relevance after 30+ years of being active.

Or you could just re-read the Wiki and see that those bands are listed as influences which is a far cry from " they rip off some fucking awesome bands".

Or just come to the conclusion that real awesome bands [almost? well not anymore anyway] never become major pop icons that the masses will eat up like a deep fried twinkie.
