when I worked at a GC I saw people win on looks and attitude. an old white man with a beat to shit parts guitar mostly fender and silly faces got it one week over a kid with skinny jeans who was more talented but did not make funny faces. another week I saw one guy advance probably because he had a good sounding fuzz pedal. the judges didn't even know he was using it until after. compared to the other two people and no fuzz I can kinda see why he would win. people were not judged correctly half the time. also, a lot of the people that win in the end are professionals and it is totally against the rules. they just pretend that they have never been on tour or put out a record so they dont get disqualified.

Dudes, I went to one at a local guitar center, and everyone plays the same shitty scale, but no joke, what wins it for people is the guitar face. I'm not kidding, the guys that made the best guitar faces, move on. This guy proves it. Anyone can wank over a standard blues progression, but it takes real talent to look like you're passing a fucking basketball through your dick while doing it

ogawd the backing band is fucking terrible. am i the only one that can't get over that?
and i get the whole "he's happy, why be mad" thing, but its just ignoring the root of the problem. and that problem proves that the blues has been utterly fucking disgraced and debased to the point that a happy-ass white dude with the right faces and contrived licks can be crowned king of a genre thats supposedly renowned for being rooted in black tradition, sorrow, and laying out your soul on the damn guitar.
and yeah, who gives a shit what color you are when you're playing the blues, just put your goddamn heart on those strings not some polished bullshit academiated series of muscle memory and learned reactions.
its not that its not real blues, its that its not REAL blues. in the colloquial sense of the word.
