baltimore's pretty awesome, but not as amazing rad as the national press seem to think. dan deacon/wham city rules the scene these days. most of that music is not my thing, but i'm sure i would have been into it way more when i was in hs/college. horrible sound + sweaty hot dirty warehouses + smelly art school kids = no patience for that scene anymore
but... they get major props for amping up all ages shows and doing stuff in non-traditional venues which is always a positive

New Jersey is pretty bad right now. We used to have a fairly active scene until the bulk of the all-ages venues shut down due to flooding/incompetence/etc. Right now, it just seems like people don't want to come out to do much of anything for the most part. Even if it's free.

The indoor smoking ban definitely had a negative effect on places as well. You're no longer forced to subject yourself to something you haven't heard before. Now you can go out for a smoke and socialize through an entire show.

Right now, the only active "scene" is hardcore. And by hardcore I mean a bunch of bands that are all going for the Deathwish sound in one way or another, and only want you to play 15 minute sets. Some of the bands are actually pretty awesome, but unless you sound almost exactly like them/have a member of your band in one of the hardcore bands, don't count on getting anyone to watch you when you play. It's acceptable only if you're a stoner metal/rock band, which for some reason is cool with hardcore kids. The bulk of these shows take place in basements (which have a high likelihood of getting shut down), or in Moose Lodges/American Legions (which means you're at the mercy of the members and can have your date changed/canceled at the drop of a hat)

We're currently trying to rejuvenate some sort of "scene" in our area by holding shows at a local CD/record store called Soundstation in Westfield, NJ. So far the response has been increasingly positive. It's gone from one show per month to two; one ran by the owners, one ran by myself and my cohort.

I'm from Cork City in Ireland. These days things seem to be looking up for what's going on in the city. Plenty of new bands coming out and a lot of them getting or starting to get national media play. There's a pretty strong coverage of what's going on because of websites and college papers too. What really fucking kills me though is most bands refuse to work together. Most bands seem to hold each other at arms length. It's not like it's a big scene either, you could count the most important bands on one hand but still people act like it's one big fucking pissing contest.

On top of that things are so small that when you do honestly express a slightly negative opinion of another band some people freak the fuck out. I recently had somebody give me shit at a gig because of a review i wrote in a local paper. It wasn't like I slated the band or anything, just expressed that they sounded mediocre, which they were. Aside from that things are looking up. Minus the clusterfuck drama.
