A good looper that does overdubs was what I used. As for beats,I just tapped rhythmically on my pups thru all manner of fuzz, delay and other stuff. I eventually upgraded to an Akai Headrush E2.

As for tapping out the beats on the pups, having an envelope filter with the sensitivity on zero, helps add some bassiness to it. But having access to some rad software would open up the world of possibilities,I'm sure.

i've done that kind of sound-generated-beats thing a little, using the kind of ideas that Radiohead used when they were constructing beats for Kid A, i.e. white noise can substitute for a cymbal. i wasn't entirely happy with what i got, and have generally stayed with "drum"-less stuff for my loops. in the future i may start using my old HR-16 MIDIed to my rackmount stuff and triggered with a MIDI Mouse.
