Fuzzrite vs. Bosstone vs. Superfuzz?

Stop Refrerencing--probably not telling you anything you don't know, but the most consistent word on the Jack Johnson sessions (where "Go Ahead John" comes from) was Musicmaster or Mustang into Bosstone. There's also talk about Sonny Sharrock ghosting on those sessions, but this sounds like McLaughlin to me.

It also sounds like a starved Bosstone--that certain whooshy wooliness (bah--words) it's what my Mahoney clone and my Monsterpiece AD 2000, and my little Beavis-Boarded widgets sound like when I starve them.

I also agree that the Merkin will get you closer to that sound than a straight-up Fuzzrite. I freaking love a straight-up Fuzzrite, but that ain't what you're hearing on Jack Johnson. Merkin can get that spittiness, but as John says, there's a lot more body if/when you want it (and also, imho, the wooly whooshiness, lol). Also, as I'm sure you understand, the PTD Bone Machines are Bosstone derived--might be something to tweak on.

At full voltage, certain Bosstones can sound like a distortion into a cocked wah--heaps of midrange, very vocal, tight bass. But they get more broken sounding when you starve them (duh!). My Mahoney is in this camp. AD2000 is thinner/spittier--more like the prototypical 6Ts garage psych tone. But listen to John--it's obvious he really understands these circuits on a deep level.

It kind of sounds like a Brassmaster in how course the fuzz is.
It's a ripping but not too compressed or high gain type sound.
Could be a (Maestro) brassmaster or a Maestro FZ-1.
But really it could be achieved with several pedals in that camp.

It sounds like some of what you may be hearing is also sax and trumpet overdriven and/or run through some fuzz. getting that BRASSmaster sound.
