Not, if you like treble. ANY treble.

I love muffs, but it's not a one-fuzz-does-all. I think it's a bit too smooth for what TS is looking for.

Well, either way, zack welcome to ILF, and welcome to the never-ending quest for tone.

i missed the thickfreakness thing
wasnt it like a watchamacallit maestro thingo?

I guess it was actually a zvex octane. But when I thought it was a green muff I thought I had the sound fucking nailed with my eqd hoof. It really doesn't sound like an octane to me, but I guess that's what it was :idk:

Yeah, I'm looking into getting an older muff, something that has a bit more thickness to it. Also, if there's any good clones anyone knows of for any of the pedals recommended, it'd be much appreciated. I've heard a fair amount of good things about the folks at BYOC but my personal experience is semi lackluster. Also, the pedal Dan from The Keys used on Thickfreakness was a Maestro MFZ-1, that big clunky pedal with wheels instead of knobs. I did extensive research/saw him in a part of town and bothered him about it. Good luck finding one though.

Well seeing you're from Akron you should just hit up Jamie for a hoof.

...And probably some other things.

Yes!

The Hoof is a good place to start, like it has been said it really is a quest for what is the best fuzz for YOU. One box that someone of note may have used in a record sometimes does not bond well with you.

Again, Earthquaker has some solid wares.

HM-300(behringer's boss hm-2 clone) -> black russian is my current set up.

hm-300 w/ distortion maxed = trasnparent bass distortion and fizzy top end for all your lightly fuzzy needs (aka your lighter pavement)
Black Russian = all your black key's toanz as well as all you thick chords.
Both together = massive wall of sound with a slow attack and infinite sustain.

Both those can be had very cheaply and easily so as to leave you plenty of $$$ for the amp.

I'm currently getting by with a vox ac4 but, assuming you have some form of cabinet, you should be able to get an acoustic b200h and stay in your price range. Yes it's a bass amp but, it has an eq so it should work with guitar (maybe you can add all the mids the muff takes out) and, at a dollar a watt, it seems like a solid buy.

EQD Hoof FuZZ! or Earthbound Audio Supercollider if you can score one.

Another component to the SSPU fuzztone is, in my understanding, a 3000 dollar Hiwatt amp. I do love myself the "little lover's" solo, btw.

If your budget is actually 500-800 dollars go snag an old tube head (check off-brand gems like the Peavey Butcher and the Sovtek MIGs) and a beat-to-hell 2x12.

I think you'll be surprised by how much better your rig sounds through a larger amp.

Do a tone bypass mod on you muff. Adds in some mids.

Ibanez Standard fuzz -- sounds like that's what's on Thickfreakness, although I read somewhere he used a Fulltone Soulbender on that record ... weird.
Ibanez Standard is like the best Super-Fuzz you've ever heard. Thick and full-on and all that.
You'll like it.

You know this must be wise recommendation when a pedal builder tells you to get a new amp first. :thumb:

Oh... so no one's told you yet...

Guys, which one of you is gunna take this? :erm:

How about a Musket Fuzz, i've not played one but... Big Muff with extra boost and a mids control, seems simple enough to me.

Oh and of course, amp before pedals... addictive as they may be.
