Thanks so much. Those are really pretty. I like everything about them except the tailpieces... And the Dead connection.

they really were rare...i was interested in them back then because i like the Dead but i never saw one in a shop even though i lived in the second-largest city in America. and i've never seen one on eBay either (which doesn't mean they don't appear), though i see the symmetrical Artist models show up all the time.

They're neat in a gimmicky kinda way though, as in they're cool in a DIY beater guitar. Not so much a Firebird X.
Active pups?
Yeah, I like things that do one thing well, can't stand digital, multi-effects, modeling hoopajoops. One stomp box, one effect set the way I like it. However, I know I'm on the furthest end of that spectrum as far as preference goes and I remember it's all a matter of preference.

the onboard Kaoss Pad appeals to me because it's an onboard synth/effects controller that's more useable and elegant than something like the Kirkpatrick ribbon controller. i like the kind of stuff that Jonny Greenwood does with the Kaoss Pad manipulating live samples onstage, slicing and dicing stuff, and you could do some truly fucked up stuff playing into a signal chain and a MIDI sampler and then doing cutups with the Kaoss Pad without having to leave the guitar and go to a separate controller on a stand or table-top.
