If I built this circuit I'd use 2 x 6112 subminis. It'd fit in a 1590B, including a SMPS or charge pump HV supply - hell, a transistor BM is huge and mostly empty space.

Power consumption would be 12v @ ~500ma - running the two 6112's heaters in series limit's the combined heater draw to 300ma, then a small amount for the anodes and a nice wedge left over for the SMPS. If I was gonna do it I'd use a NE555 based SMPS running at 150v.

......anyways, I'm not planning to build one (unless someone commissions me), I'm down with Scruffie - tubes should be used to overdrive other tubes, not to clip fkg diodes.

With a MAX1771 charge pump, you could probably get it all in the same sized enclosure as the current little big muff, maybe even using full sized tubes, you'd just need a 12V supply for the heaters which could be increased up to around 240 on the plates.

There's some Marshall amp... seems like some version of the JCM900 that uses diodes to clip.

I guess it's no different than using solid state distortion (a pedal) to supplement your amp's distortion... but, like... I dunno. It's wrong.

I thought most JCM900s except for the SL-X used clipping diodes. They sound fine to me, but yeah, I dunno.

That's probably right. I don't know anything about any specific amp line.

Without looking schematics, it may use diodes in the Pre-Amp to clip but then it has a Power Amp to get the nice tube distortion and headroom, where as here, we'd treat it as a stand-alone preamp.

I mean people use diodes in tube screamers to drive there tube amps but the way the Big Muff works just makes it feel kinda not worth it, all the saturation in a big muff comes from those two driven stages of clipping, so adding tubes doesn't really accomplish anything, it's still gunna get massively clipped and have the signal limited... not saying it wouldn't sound different, I just think there are other circuits that tube adaptions could work better for.

Maybe a Super Tonebender (which only has the one stage of clipping) and using LEDs for a high forward voltage could be kinda cool, yeah it's still clipped but less and the tubes will get driven harder.

Or maybe just me and Frequency Central share the same mental block that the two don't go together where as they're perfectly fine in reality.
