I've been lucky as far as finding drummers goes. I'll package up one of my drummer friends and ship him out via priority mail.

Whether he likes it or not.

Hey, if you want, I'll UPS you one of my band's drummers. You gotta be cool with a potheaded, fraternity member that loves the band Bayside.

I used to be all "Drum machines suck and should never be used." Now, I can see where they work. I realized I just hated that classic gangsta rap sounding drum machine. I think it's the 808 but it might not be that. Either way, being able to improvise at least a little is necessary for me in a live setting, so...no drum machine.

Would it be possible/feasible to get a drum machine to play in 6/8? Because that seems like it'd be the dealbreaker for me.

Well the way I do it you could.

- I take the step count in reason and match it to the time signature I want.
- Then set the signature in the little transport window.
- Rewire finished sequencer beats to Cubase for tweakin/fuckery
-Bounce to cass tape for later/live use. I like degraded tape so the beat sounds all fukked upp. Then its ripe for moar fuckery via pedals whutever else u wunt

I need to collab with Lil B

Dude, you live in the middle of Landlocked Suffering, Middle of the US. Are you seriously saying that you don't live/love Big Black?

No, I'm saying that I eventually came around to drum machines in the proper context. I don't think they should be used as an alternative for a drummer unless you either really need to or if you want that specific sound. That was all long before I had ever heard of Big Black, who totally rule.

I really prefer live drums for most of my stuff, but if you write songs for a drum machine, there's no reason it cant be fucking awesome. I mostly use Reason/record for all that electronic stuff, but the Roland mc-303 is totally useable, and pretty cheap these days. "old" drum machines are just as good as new expensive ones. Plus the roland manual is online :)

If you are going for another human, put up signs/ads. be crystal fucking clear of your intentions. Such as:

"Need a drummer who is cool with fuzzed out basses and 6/8, practice once a week short tours and regional gigs! INfluences include: The Ronald Raygun, Pat Boone. No drunks or addicts."
That last part is going to turn a lot of fuckheads away, less trouble for you.

Also, trolling near the college is a great idea. Lots of jazz dudes who want to rock out.

this. if you have to use a drum machine, remember the difference between a drummer and a drum machine... whatever that is, and work with it.

you can't have a yamaha porto-sound back stoner rock without a huge EQ shift n some other tweaks, but you CAN have it back lo-fi indie pop chit like Spooktober or w/e

it works better on the album

DO IT!!!

and I mean that in more than one way. And I mean that in more than one way.

Just to reiterate, jazz/rock drummers are where it's at. They tend to be better at thinking "outside the box" and aren't always all BOOM BOOM CRASH, but still can be.
