J basses are like teles, you have to dig a bit for your "the one". Mine is made from parts I got off ebay: 89 MIJ body, 84 ESP neck, Dimarzio ultra jazz pickups, I think total cost was around $400

Re: Question about J-Basses
A lot of people will probably disagree, but you should get one of those Schecter fender knock offs. You won't have to upgrade hardware or electronics, and they play/sound great. The only problems I have had with Schecters is that the action is usually set SUPER low. However, that's just preference and usually easily remedied.

Re: Question about J-Basses
I've got a 2004ish MIM and it's great, even for the inflated UK price. My friend's MIA is really good, and I've played some nice squiers too. You have to look around for a good one I think, but once you find it you're set.

I wanna replace the pots and maybe a different cap for the tone knob, but not sure if I should do more.
I have a MIJ 82 J-Bass and put in Lollar jazz bass pickups. They make ALL the difference in the world. No noise, and now I can make full use of the tone knob. Before, the bass was so bright, now it's perfect.

I've been wondering about those. It's very likely going to be my next bass. Did you do any pickup tweaks or anything?

Re: Question about J-Basses
heh, no. But the other bassist wants to swap them out. The volume pot was whack in mine, reminds me.... must go fix that.

Re: Question about J-Basses
The american specials are awesome.I have a pj with nordstrands that sound full and clear nice well rounded sound.
Re: Question about J-Basses
Well..maybe that's because yours has Nordstrands?
I wasn't planning on modding...so, if Fender's only sound good if you mod them to pieces...then maybe I should get something else

Re: Question about J-Basses
My MIM is stock and it sounds fine. It could probably sound better, but still sounds good.

Not sure I want a J-Bass anymore...but still looking
Hey guys..a little update. Just got back from Guitar Center..tried out most of the basses they had in stock (a relatively limited selection, admittedly)
Based on that, I'm now actually leaning more toward the active/humbucker route a la Music Man or Ibanez
I don't know anymore..

I have 2 Squier J's and they are awesome, plus I am not afraid to beat on them like an ignorant guitar player

Re: Question about J-Basses
In light of the fact that I'm leaning more towards the active basses....is that going to be an issue if I make the leap into bass effects? (which will happen, I assure you..unless I'm told that it's a no-no)
