Mogwai is very good, The Hawk Is Howling and Happy Songs have both accompanied my studies.

I have had two successful studying media. The first involved association. I figured if I could associate what I was studying with something I was thnking about all the time it would make what I was studying easy to remember. So I would watch porn while I studied to associate con-law cases with sex in my brain. And it worked amazingly well, I always came out in the top of the distribution on exams. It is extremely difficult to maintain this, and I eventually had to give up this method.

The other way I study is to listen to certain kinds of music or artists for each subject. For instance philosophy is always live gy!be stuff or 1950's jazz or bebop. English/lit is always classical. Math is dirty blues stuff or, more appropriately, techno. Econ/poli sci is whatever is my band of the week, this week would be best coast or punch brothers.

explosions in the sky, moving mountains, mogwai, time columns, russian circles do it for me, anything mostly instrumental and ambient. lyrics or really heavy and fast stuff always distracted me

I can't really study with music unless it's really ambient. Otherwise I get sucked into the music and lose focus.

I've had some good times studying with Earth, The Mercury Program, Mogwai, and Friends in the Mountains.

Super technical and vox are growly enough to not be distracted by understanding actual words...
Also some sludge is always nice. maybe some Electric Wizard, Bongzilla, Weedeater, etc.

when i was in school i always found that music i actually liked/wanted to listen to was too distracting for proper concentration...i'd either leave newsradio on in the background or have some FM rock station playing quietly. nowadays i really can't work with music on at all...i just wind up listening to the music. if i have a choice between concentrating on work, which i don't like, or music, which i do like, what do you think i'm gonna do?
