well, so far so good. i spent an hour and a half talking to the company owner--this is a small outfit which publishes motor racing magazines--and he seems to like me. he wants someone like me for the position, i.e. someone older, responsible, with a production history and enthusiasm for the sport. he's going to have me back in after the holiday weekend to meet with the woman who's the sales manager/business honch, and probably do a sample layout test. but i think i may be good here. they're having me back, so that must be good. thank you for your support. i'll let you know what happens next.

Oh jeez...now I'm jealous! Degrees in Journalism and English, way too much experience in hand-done layout, and a life-long Euro'centric motorhead. And in Santa Cruz, to boot. What's the position for?

And 'gratz! Sounds really good.

Nice! Having gone for interviews for gigs that I'm not necessarily interested in, I know what a rare deal it is to find a good one with content you're actually into AND the possibility of the right HR fit. Good vibes sent for the followup!

though it would mainly be a production and layout position, i'd also be coordinating writers and photographers covering vintage racing events and arranging for credentials at racing venues, proofing, assembling ads, and generally bearing a large part of the responsibility for getting at least one and possibly two monthly magazines out the door depending on how much work load i can handle; i believe the title "editor" was actually bandied about at one point.

the thing that makes me feel good about it is that though the owner and i are very different people--he's a Silicon Valley millionaire who retired and started the magazines as part of his vintage-racing hobby--he's a straight-up guy who looks you in the eye when he talks to you. i felt totally comfortable with him even though i'm a hippie dirtbag.

Sounds like the position should be called "managing editor" to me. I did that gig for a couple years. Loads of responsibility, but once you get in the groove, it's actually a lot of fun.

Working in publishing is its own weird but fun thing. I did it for about 10 years.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
