Ewwww.
I really want a white one but I think other finishes look stupid except for natural, have they really discontinued white? That's insane.

If more people bought, ordered them in white then... Personally I'm not a fan of them in white, or burst, inless it's blueburst which transcends all.

They stopped doing them with black adornments in the early 90's.

Dig it, from that first pic. I'm a sucker for sparkle tops though. I have to agree the blue 4001s, and natural are muh favs

Also since it was brought up...
I have never liked their 8 string headstocks

I just can't see why they couldn't have done it like the guitars

I actually like how they kept the original headstock, since it's got - unlike the guitar headstock (perhaps my least favorite of ALL guitar headstocks) - an interesting shape. And all tuners visible, showing immediately it's not just a regular bass.
...funny, isn't it, how people have so different tastes when it comes to Rickenbacker basses, even if everybody seems to like them.

Very.

Actually I'm not talking about the shape but the sideways tuners, that could be done to a normal ric bass head shape. Normally I like 8 string heads that are big but for some reason it looks funny on a ric to me

OH, RIGHT, that. Yes, I agree - the trademark headstock seems funny when it's bent out of familiar iconic shape, as if the instrument got a long face for somebody sticking the extra tuners in its head.
When it comes to Ric colors: my bass player collegue of my new band has this 70's Porche red 4001 with black parts. It's has nothing to do with being classy, it's straight Porn and Rock 'n roll.
Another band mate got this awesome looking 70's white 4001, which was turning into greenish-yellowish because of aging and the finish was having darker stains and crackles in the back... it was a really neat looking instrument, for a white instrument.
Yet another bandmate has this pretty basic cherry burst. But the maple showing through looks like flame maple

My favorite color (for the 4003 at least) was the tourquoise color.

THAT'S...

well, it can look good, though I tend to skip anything in turquoise myself. But I can easily imagine it could be actually pretty nice as a burst. Perhaps.
One thing about the other-than-black finishes is that they speak up the instrument shape on stage. A friends has a genuine Black Star Rickenbacker bass, black parts on black body and some such extras that just almost loses the Rickenbacker aesthetics because of this. Of course it's fucking awesome! It's über cool concept in a Gothic and/or Spinal Tap way, having reversed the stock parts color scheme for more dark looks

but that body shape jsut doesn't show so good, anymore. The opposite color pickguard actually enhances the bodyshape, just as much as the binding does.

It COULD be somemother color, too, like tortoise, I think. Or aluminum.
