Yea, lots of stuff. Johnny Greenwood was at one time my "hero" and then Thurston Moore.

Not that long after I started playing I bought a Whammy because I was really into rage and audioslave. Eventually I got bored of it and sold it on and I'm pretty sure I haven't bought anything else because a famous person uses it since. Won't lie though, if Neil Young used a single pedal (rather than sweet amps and some old effects) to get his tone I would buy one so hard.

As I have previously admitted, back about 4 years ago, I went nuts putting together a pedalboard based on Justin Chancellor's. It was at least half-way defendable because I was in a covers band that covered a handful of Tool songs. But I've swapped so much shit out that it's not really recognizable anymore. Though I would still give my left nut for a Wal bass.

Haha, I totally agree with some of your points and found this funny but you have to understand that when I said I intentionally strayed away I am talking when I was naive, young and still on the circuit. It's amazing to think how people will assume shit about you just because they see you either own or play something. I've had too many-a-heroes try assess my playing and equipment and tell me who I'm imitating when in reality I just love the gear itself. I want to start building my own effects and guitars in the future if money and time suffice. It's not just a fad for me.
modernage wrote:What I think is lame though is when people only buy gear based off of pictures of pedalboards they saw on a gear forum owned by someone who never played his guitar outside of his bedroom. That seems silly to me.
I've had this happen in person (and by that same person on the internet, which I found funny, as they were quite rude in person and didn't know it was me on the internets) where someone literally bought almost anything I had in my rig. Understandably, he was a lot more wealthy and into similar stuff to me I suppose, but it was pretty damn obvious when every week that I had something he would come back with the entire line of effects. I've never seen this happen in an online capacity though... HAVING SAID THAT... I know a couple "HM Idols" who bought a certain delay pedal once I demoed it and showed it's awesomeness

bastards don't even me and happy to buy up possible spares that could have been mine? This is why I neglect to disclose some particular pedals and gear online, but for the most part it's all good fun and there's plenty of fun and awesomeness to go around. Looking at my rig right now, aside from that tremolo Issac had that's still in the mail, only my Jazzmaster is kind of idol-like but wasn't bought for that reason (though admittedly I do NOT play it out because of that reason... sad, I know, I'll get over it/or go to hell for being dishonest to myself).

I buy a lot of gear because I like the way it sounds on records and/or live? What's wrong with that?

EDIT: I also own a couple of pieces of Trent Reznor's gear from his housecleaning auctions a little over a year back, so literally, I own a Whammy/Wah and a Zoom 9050 because of someone famous!

Im not ashamed Paul barker has an awesome sound Im not trying to nail it just get a similar vibe. The assmaster was replaced by a Gnomeratron VTF it seems to have more umph to it and it still has that rad subtle octave.

Really? $40 on
ebay all day every day

Here's one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Danelectro-French-T ... 3f09ee7275I wanted a resonator the first time I saw Rory Gallagher play one. Finally got one last year, although it's a completely different type and I can't play it anything like he did. Still cool though.

Errr I guess thrice bringing the heavy with nothing but AC30's made me come back to vox, though I've only got the AC15c1 now.
I want to get one of those Morgan 30/800 Dustin is using these days.

I think the tone on beggars is what made me pull the trigger on my ac30.

I got a harmonic percolator because Steve Albini uses one. It was a little surprising that it actually got me to sound a lot like Shellac. It can be annoying too though, because I've listened to so much of that stuff it makes me go back to that playing style more or less without wanting to. It is not a real super-expensive one, it's one made by nbabmf here from ILF, which made it even more surprising that it works that way. Also the rest of my setup is different. No aluminum necks, no humbuckers, dark sounding amp... It has kind of gotten me in a mood to check out other famous gear. I already have a Superfuzz clone coming and I am sort of looking for a big muff to check out Mudhoney tones. Maybe I will get that Vacuum Fuzz Muff variant that is based on the one the dude from Mission of Burma uses... It is a fad I guess and it will pass. A little like learning to cover songs you like in order to take the skills you need for your own stuff and forget about the rest.
