Think that the Boss CS-3, used, would be a good enough start with its tone knob? They're going for like $30+S&H on the eBay, so it'd be a nice cheap start to compressors..

Go get the Whirlwind Rochester red box -- same as a vintage Script Dynacomp but TB, not noisy, and cheap ($80ish used).

They don't have one at the place I got my Malekko trem, unfortunately. The only other Malekko pedals they have are the tiny vibrato and the 616.

I think the issue with the Malekko compressor might be the lack of a tone knob, but we'll see. I'll definitely try it when they get it in a store locally!

-1 on the Dyna Comp, had one and traded it pretty fast:
I know everyone Loves them but I just couldn't use it.

I have tried the Dyna-4Knob Keeley-Soul Preacher and keep coming back to the same Squarebutton Ibanez compressor 2:
It has perfect squish.
On the ones that owned that you can actually buy, I liked the knockout the best: The keeley was great but I don't want to tweak a comp all day: Plus and I know this is picking of nits the LED is so bright when combined with knobs you can't see any settings when it is on.

Heard good things aboot Boss comps I know a bunch of people who sware by them.
As far as setting one up I like to get the squish where i want it and then bring the level up to slightly above unity gain. I don't really use a comp for the long sustain, more for that snappy attack.

Yah for sure! I haven't used the tone press but keep hearing it's great to add sustain. I'm curious about the Malekko too

You might not think of it, but the Noisemaker Effects Dead Hipster can provide some amount of compression (just by virtue of the circuit).
You can request an added tone-knob for added flexibility

I had a Barber Tone Press and it didn't sound bad it just didn't seem to make enough difference it the signal or sustain to justify keeping it.
Maybe that would be the case with any compressor in my set up though.
I was using it with humbuckers and a lot of Fuzz and Reverb. Maybe that kind of drowned out it's effects.
It worked pretty good as a boost though and you can find them for about $100.

Thanks for the quick review, I don't know anyone who has actually owned or played one.

I SWEAR BY MY BOSS CS-2! Beside my tuner, it may be the oldest pedal on my board and it's survived many changes in my board. Makes a nasty boost, great and effective compression that doesn't dull the high end, or cut the low end. Plenty of compression is available. I actually was surprised to see I preferred it to my Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone. The CS-2 uses a VCA as opposed to the optical compression of the Pigtronix. I only paid like 50-something for me, but they've grown in price. I MUCH prefer it to the CS-3, as the CS-2 sounds more organic. The CS-3 has a fake, plasticy sound to it. I can't describe it more than that; but the tone knob is useful. I have found the CS-2's attack knob serves better than a tone as it doesn't color the sound, just accentuates pick attack and high end (in a way that I really like). Damn, I love that pedal.
