The POGs are pretty awesome. I had a POG2 for a while that I miss having around. I don't know about anyone else, but even though octave pedals do change the pitch of what you are playing, I don't really think of them when it comes to pitch shifters. For me personally a pitch shifter has to do more than just octaves, otherwise it's just an octave pedal. Now a HOG on the other hand!!!

I will second the PS-5. Small footprint, and can do a lot while not being cryptic and overwhelming. Plus newbs love Boss pedals. Next thing you know you're buddy will be selling plasma, so he can buy a Pitchfactor.

PS-5... i tried it, didn't like it but that doesn't mean i can't recommend it for the money... no problem!

I have a PS-5 and a Harmonist, both pretty cool and full of magic for the size and price. And both do some amaaaaaaaaazing electronic carnival organ sounding shit in a feedback loop. That being said - they have the signature Boss clinical digital chip tone that is so NOT the tone of your instrument. Though they are blendable. Probably the best balance of features to expense in my opinion though.

I have an extra pog that I would let me band buddy use my POG, but I think he is looking for more of wacky pitch-shifting, because he heard what his digitech multiprocessor labeled as a "pitch-shifter"

Even to me it's total overkill, but it's so fun. Theres some sweet octave fuzz tones to be had as well as crazy 8 bit video game style tones.

I think that if you want to use pitch shiffter pedal as with whammy bar / expression pedal for "octave swells" from original octave to -+1 / -+2 octave or dive bombs then best pick is Digitech Whammy 4. I've tried everything except Whammy DT and Mini Ark and i can say that every time i played with polyphonic pitch shiffter i found out deficiency in the sound. The feeling just wasn't right while i was playing when it was on OR off.

• Boss PS-2 & 3 are more like delays with options of additional octave +-
• Boss PS-6 is polyphonic (which is great for Pog style) but it has such a digital overtone/vibe in a pitch shiffter mode in a very bad way.
• Boss PS-5 is lagging with tracking in a "off - buffered state" in a pitch shiffter mode which really bothered me, but one big plus is that you can adjust the time of bend up and bend down, which can help you in some situations (live example http://youtu.be/rnPudZSaUPM our Slovenian band)
• while digital monophonic Digitech Whammy 4 has this glitchy effect which makes some special effect to whole thing and because it's monophonic the octaves sounds more natural, your tone seems to be more like as you would play it for real one octave above. Do the TB mod if you can, or throw it into loop of TB looper, cause it can eat your tone.
• Digitech Whammy DT justified only drop tune mode, and because of that it's polyphonic again your tone is less warm as you would expect to be and i've read some random review and the guy noticed that DT don't track 100% of your playing in Drop Tune mode and this is mostly noticeable while you're playing fast lead stuff.
• EHX Ringthing is fun because of all other stuff but it's the same problem as original Pog / Micro Pog / Pog 2, octave is not as warm as Whammy's is (i did A/B test) but it tracks really well
• EHX Pog, Micro Pog & Pog 2, those are polyphonic octave generators not pitch shiffters
• EHX HOG, now this is something that inspired me to create music and this by itself BUT it's to huge with preset unit and expression pedal, plus the price. Whammy part is awesome.

as far as price goes... Whammy 4 wins again. You can get one Used for £100 / 130€ / $100 on eBays or even cheaper at some local forums.

Love my whammy, if you want some of the sounds you can also get an expression factory for not a ton of money and have a boatload of decent sounds

another freak pedal that doesn't come up much is the old Boss ME-33: the ring mod and pitch shift on that are very sweet and do some crazy things, you just have to go through and program it to not run any of the amp models and just the pedal effects you want but you can get em for under 100 and do some crazy things with them.

POG and its variant are the king of octave units. I want to get the old Mutron double octave. (stopping before I go on a tangent) I would recommend the Micro POG. That was my entrance into a mad obsession with pitch effects. Digitech Whammy is also a good buy. DO NOT get the Boss PS-5. Has weird output issues when changing settings even with the pedal off. The PS-6 corrects this and also has better sounds to be had. The PS-2 and 3 obviously have reputations of their own for being great. For best an essential is any analog sub octave. I have and love the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe, which is a definite winner. The Boss OC series are all great, the OC-2 is incredible as well.

Have him pick up a Boss OC or MXR Bass Octave for dirt cheap and love the low end!

I have a Boss PS-2, it is really glitchy and I like that, but if you're looking for normal pitch shifting I won't advice it..

I use and love my Whammy. I'd love to get a pitchfactor, but the whammy works just as well.

all who use Whammy will never be satisfied with any of the replacement, because like i said it has that glitchy effect which makes it so special and every other effect dosen't have this.

Boss PS-2 & 3 - the most common use is delay with upper octave - as you may know as shimmer effect, but you can not control the time of these delays on both units (Empress SD offers that option), but the nice thing are trails.

I have a PS-2 and never was able to create a delay with upper octave with this pedal alone, it is is delay or pitchshifting and not both st the same time.. Or am I doing something wrong?
