Not true. There is a definite difference, something to do with capacitance as the battery is part of the circuit in a FF.
Dreamcrusher is pretty high gain or a Ge FF too (isn't it NKT274?), so that will also make a difference. If you try it with lower gain NKT275s, you'll hear a difference in the top end between C-Zn and alkaline batteries. Same with a few of the other earlier fuzzes, like some of the tone bender circuits. Muffs don't seem to care though.

I pre-ordered a Fulltone '69 mkII. I don't have any other Fulltone pedals, but I figured this would be the one to hop on... OCD-sized enclosure, and my understanding is that it has all the features of the '69 and '69 Slight Return, just with smaller little knobbies. I didn't know what the '69 was until yesterday, but I guess it's a pretty good Fuzz Face rip-off?

I played it a bandmate's and he did not like it after playing my AB-synth...not really before either. Just sounds good dime'd from what I recall. He sold it for a Algal Bloom, which, after obtaining recently, is a good call. Can get damn close and do more.
Still not sure which vintage fuzz may be...Fuzz Face or Superfuzz.

Well, yeah, I love my Algal Bloom. Main fuzz f'reals. I was intrigued by the Fuzz Face video by GMD earlier in the thread, so I figured I'd pick up a '69 while I had the chance. The resale value shouldn't be too bad. I realized yesterday that I don't have a single germanium fuzz, so I'm going to compare and contrast if only for a good history lesson.

Hells yeah, enjoy. I bet you'll like it more than he did. i'm sure it'll sound different like the OCD 1 through 4 does.

They're my favorite fuzz, yet I don't own one. Time to see if Jim Roth wants to build me one.

That Fulltone '69 MkII should be a great start to fuzz faces. Congrats!

Post a demo video when you get it, please!

HOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Anyone know if all of the mid-90s Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Faces have germanium circuits/transistors (not sure of the right nomenclature)?
The two in the GMD video that is referenced earlier both appear to be germanium... those being the "Dunlop" Dunlop version and the "Dallas-Arbiter" Dunlop version. Anyone have any idea of a timeline for silicon or germanium in the Dunlop Fuzz Faces?

I'd gathered that the NTK275's in the reissue had the right designation but didn't sound the same as old components. Don't know if they'll do better with a bias adjustment, though. The word in DIY circles is that most germs with the right leakage-adjusted gain will work well when biased appropriately. Whether they sound just like a specific NOS germanium transistor is another matter, but a bias trimmer is your friend.
